1928 Phaeton curtain pan
anyone have any under carriage pics of their car? I'm looking for some shots of how/where the curtain pan rivets/bolts to. I think at the back it goes under at the cross member in front of the rear seat not sure....Thanks!

Re: 1928 Phaeton curtain pan
I have an early 29 phaeton that original had a curtain tray on it under the rear floorboard, but everything was missing except the hinge mounting holes and rear tray mounting holes when I bought the car. I pretty much have everything figured out after a lot of research on curtain trays in 28/early29 phaetons. If you want information on them and some pictures, PM me with your email and what you are looking for.

Re: 1928 Phaeton curtain pan
I am about to pull the body off chassis of my 28 original phaeton.
It does have timber stringers and timber floor maybe not the same as US ones? But if anyone needs pics, I will get some underneath. |

Re: 1928 Phaeton curtain pan
Should have a wooden trap door where you would rest your feet if you were sitting in the back seat

Re: 1928 Phaeton curtain pan
Yup, it has the wooden door set into rear wooden floor under mat with a brass ring pull.
The tray itself is steel. I hoofed into it today, it is almost ready to lift. Trying to save the 3/8th head bolts with thin nuts that hold the apron to rear guard. The bolts look the same that clamps the tank to cowl sides. Don't think I can get the coach bolts out the join between rear guard and running board , they are turning even with a bit of heat and I don't want to burn paint, so may have to cut them off. Re: 1928 Phaeton curtain pan
Can anyone help me understand the side-curtain storage situation on the 1928 / '29 Phaetons ? I understood that the early '28's had the curtain storage in a compartment under the rear floor boards, but that the later '29 Phaeton's did not have this under-the-floor-board storage area. The side-curtains were stored under the seat cusion.
I am hoping somewone will educate me to the situation. I am talking about U.S. made and sold cars only. |

Re: 1928 Phaeton curtain pan
Doug,
I believe all 28 and early 29 phaetons had curtain trays mounted under the rear floorboard and part of the tray under the front seat pan. There were two alignments for the under the rear floorboard trays I stumbled onto when I was trying to install my early 29 tray. I had nothing left of the tray except the hinge holes and the mounting holes in the rear side of the body crossmember. Early 28's have the rear end of the curtain tray mounted to the front of the body crossmember located under the front of the back seat. Sometime in mid 28, I believe, Ford, for some reason, shifted the rear end of the tray to mount on the rear flange of the same body crossmember. I am not really sure when Ford switched from under the car tray to under the front seat, but an educated guess would be sometime in March or April of 1929. Of course, by that time there were lots of plants making model A's so there must have be a pretty wide range of dates for the switch over. I suspect the Detroit plant probably switched over sometime in February or early March with other more remote plants not switching until late April and maybe even in May sometime. Again these are my thoughts after investigating the curtain tray subject when installing the tray in my car. Rusty Nelson |

Re: 1928 Phaeton curtain pan
My May 28 phaeton has the pan under the rear floor, not sure the exact change over to the one under the seat.

Re: 1928 Phaeton curtain pan
Thank you Rusty, for your input. Apparently I have not dug deep enough to have discovered anything in print (or J.S.) to help me get a more definitive handle on this question. Your response is the first step in that process.
My Dec. '28 Phaeton does not have a curtain pan under the floorboard, and a Feb.'29 Phaeton of a friend also is sans a floor-board curtain pan. However, like yours, they may have both had them when they left the factory, but (like yours) became missing somewhere in the thirty-five years between when it left the factory and when it entered my garage. Thanks again. - Doug Vieyra Last edited by DougVieyra; 12-21-2013 at 06:00 PM. |

Re: 1928 Phaeton curtain pan
Roadster62, what is the month of your Phaeton?
My pan has a large rust hole, but I don't know of anyone making a repro with the 3 correct ribs facing up and the correct length. It should be a simple part to make. |

I am restoring a 1930 standard phaeton and was looking for information on the 'curtain pan'. I saw your post from 2010 in which you mentioned "3 correct ribs facing up". Can you explain what you meant by that since it appears I will have to make my own. |
