Default Re: Towing with a car dolly?

The reply's to the question about tow dollies all seem to against tow dollies.
I have towed car trailers, either open or enclosed for thousands of miles during the past twenty plus years, other than a flat tire or two, never had a problem.
I used a U-Haul tow dolly once, making a turn the front tires on the towed vehicle pivoted on the dolly during a turn, steering wheel was locked per instructions.. The towed vehicle was then going down the road like a "crab", very unsafe.. I had to slowly continue along my route until I could find an area to get off of the highway to reload the vehicle. The towed vehicle had lost the trans so reloading the vehicle was not an easy job.
I generally drive in excess of 50k a year under varied road conditions.. I have seen far to many empty tow dollies behind RV's, then several miles up the road I would see a vehicle off of the road, usually badly damaged..
I have also learned to not trust binder straps unless they are at least 10k rated straps, made for towing. As a precaution I also use a safety chain front and rear.. It only takes one sudden stop/movement to cause things to shift around...

I would rather use a rope than a U-Haul dolly. They do a lot of their maintenance on the side of the road. No BS, just personal experience. Blown tires or failed wheel bearings make for some white knuckle experiences, not to mention hours on the side of the road.

I was really only concerned with the possible damage to the transmission from not having the input shaft spinning. All of your points are well taken, but you guys must really know some boneheads...you mean I can't tow a #7500 trailer with my 1977 Corolla and a bumper hitch?

My tow vehicle is a 2500HD.
Could you tow using a dolly with the car facing backwards, rear wheels on the dolly and the steering wheel locked? No tranny involved. But, my advice, rent a car hauler from U-Haul. Cheap and very good if you have a tow vehicle with the correct towing capacity. The people at U-Haul will check out your vehicle before renting to you so you should be safe. Good luck.

I have towed my `35 several times with a dolly with no issues. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE! We ruined a speedometer with the original miles on it when we towed home a `37 business coupe!
