Difference between 33 and 34 frame
I was hoping someone could explain or post pictures on how to identify a 33 frame vs a 34. I know the front cross member is a bit different on early ones? I cant remember any more and I don't know where I read this info. I tried searching with no luck. Hopefully someone can fill me in.
Thanks |

Re: Difference between 33 and 34 frame
Front crossmember, as well as the front crossmeber supports where the radiator bolts down to are different. 33's have inboard shocks on the front, 34's are outboard...meaing 33's have a hole for the shock shaft to stick through the frame where as 34's do not (but the inner X has that hole drilled on both years). rear shocks are inboard on both 33 and 34

Re: Difference between 33 and 34 frame
There were two different unique-to-'33 models front cross members. The first is quite rare and easily identified by the 12" spacing between the holes for the motor mounts. The second has 17" spacing between the holes for the motor mounts (like the '34 front cross member). Both versions have rear corners that end before reaching the frame side rails to provide clearance for the inside-mounted front shock absorbers. The rear corners of a '34 front cross member extend all the way on to the lower lips of the frame side rails and are riveted there.

Re: Difference between 33 and 34 frame
I've found that the 34 frame has a triangular radiator mount located between the front frame rail and the crossmember. It is held in place with 6 rivets or bolts. The 33 is similar except that the inside corner of the radiator support triangle is cut off and it is held in with only 4 rivets or bolts.

Could also check the VIN number stamped on the frame rails (if they are still readable).

Re: Difference between 33 and 34 frame
You should probably re-rivet the front cross member in. Simple to do Big Flats Rivet Co can supply all that is needed to do a great job. I've done a couple and its no big deal. Big flats even supplies simple instructions. I prefer rivet to welding or bolts as that is the way Henry did it and I'm sure he had his reasons. Pete/Ct.

Re: Difference between 33 and 34 frame
The front cross member in your photo is a '34, consistent with your frame's VIN. Interestingly, the two pieces at the front where the radiator attaches are '33s.
