dipper or no..Q

I have a B block and rods that have new poured babbit at .010 under.
Situation is that the old guy cut the dippers off of the rod caps and plugged the holes. He was setting up for OHV. Question: I can unplug the holes on rods, but do I have any alternatives regarding the dippers, i.e.- can be run without dippers; can new dippers be put on somehow; get new/diff caps w/dippers What you engine builders suggest, thanks !

You need the dippers unless you are going full pressure, otherwise the caps won't get any oil in them. So I think you will need new caps or full pressure to the oil system. Just my thoughts, but I could be wrong.

Take off a rod cap and see if there is a hole in the crank. If so you probably have a pressurised system. You may be OK as is but I would rotate the oil pump to confirm oil comming out of the crank at the rod. Ron W

If you don't have a pressure oiling, then you will need the dippers.
You can make some out of sheet metal and hold them on with the rod bolts. I've seen that done on T engines to improve the oiling to the rods.

You can also drill and thread in some 3/16 tube to the caps and then shape the tube
that what a mate did when his where ground off by his balance guy that engine been going fine for years

I had a set that were converted back to dippers after the owner's drilled for pressure crankshaft snapped in half. These came out of a B engine that I bought to rebuild. The fix seemed to work as the rod journals had only moderate wear. They threaded the caps for a 3/16 inch steel tube that was threaded and grooved to fit at the original angle and then rebabbited.

It can be done but you have to be very careful to recreate the shape and angle of the original dippers.

Well, this idea seems plausible , thanks ! As I've not started assembly yet actually and am still gathering parts, I have a couple of ways to go.
I can still work at full pressurizing and will need a B/C crank to drill ? Just exploring options and sheet metal dippers sounds good at this point.

Anyone have a good detailed schematic for full pressure piping a B engine ...pictures maybe ?

Use dippers for 30's Chevrolet. that is what they use on T rods. Some T shops carry them. Try Langs.

Great suggestion ! Hm, might just have some such in storage shed, as I have owned '29 and '30 chevs when young and ...well, uninformed

29/30 Chevy rods had the dippers made on the rod like an A/B. The dippers for a T won't work since the bolt spread is way smaller. You might use a T dipper and fashion some to work.

Hey James,
Thanks for your input...as that info will likely save me some $, time and heartache. I was just about to order from Lang ! I still like the idea of fabricating something. But, hey...maybe I should just go buy a 4/5K OHV head and use the dipperless B rods as is
