Default Will all Veterans please arise.

I'd like to know who you are and where/how you served so that we can all say thanks. Pictures from your service would also be very nice. I'm not a veteran (was 4F in the Vietnam War draft). So, please, identify yourselves. And thank you for putting on the uniform and for your service.

Craig,

I am a veteran of two wars. I spent a year in Vietnam (1969 – 1970) with USMC Recon. I was a Corporal (E-4) in Vietnam, but was promoted to Sergeant (E-5) before I was honorably discharged stateside in early 1973. I served for four years.

I also spent four tours (years) in Iraq between 2005 - 2010. I did investigations for Army Intelligence. I was required to wear the Army uniform and had a GS-15 rating. I was embedded with the Army and lived where they lived. I went on missions based on information I developed on terrorist units. It was much like being a police officer again. I kicked doors and took people to jail. I was treated as a Lt Colonel which was much different than how I was treated in Vietnam.

The most surprising thing to me during my time in Iraq was in 2008 while on a mission one of the soldiers asked me if I had ever been in the service and I told him I had been in the Marine Corps. He asked me what I did and I told him I was in Recon. He asked me if I was in Vietnam and I told him I spent a year in Vietnam with Recon. He said, “No shit, you were in Recon”? I told him I was. From that point on I was really treated with respect. I didn't think my time in Recon 38 years earlier would mean anything to them, but they all made a big deal out of it. That same day when I returned to the S-2 shop (Intelligence Office) the Captain met me and said, “No shit, Marine Corps Recon?” I smiled and said, “No shit”. The information had beat me back to the TOC. It still amuses me that it meant so much to them. I had not even mentioned it on my first tour in Iraq and wouldn’t have mentioned it on that tour either, but the gunner in the Humvee asked me.

USAF March 1961-Nov 1965,4 years and 9 months. Spent 3 years 8 months and 6 days in England at RAF Mildenhall and Rhine Main AFB Germany with the last 6 months at Travis AFB California. Jet over two engines Air Craft mechanic but worked on more piston engine air craft than jets. That time period was at the end of the piston engine air craft and the beginning of the jet engine air craft. Met my wife in England and still married for almost 52 years. E-4 when I got out but had time in grade for E-5 but they wouldn't give it to me unless I reenlisted and I wasn't going to do that so E-4 it was. I worked on C-47, C-54, C-118, C-121, (Super Connie), C-124, C-97, and I think one or two C-74's (DC-7),C-130, C-133, C-135, C-141.

I would like to share on behalf of my Dad ...

My Dad served as an officer in the United State Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was first assigned the Destroyer USS Barker (DD213) and then transferred to the newly built Destroyer Escort USS Cecil J. Doyle (DE368) in charge of Supply. The Barker spent time in the North Atlantic hunting submarines and providing escort for merchant ships and picking up survivors. The bulk of his service was on the USS Cecil J. Doyle in the Pacific, where his ship, DE 368 hopped scotched form California to Pearl Harbor to all the hot spots on the way to Japan hunting Submarines, picket duty as the outer line of defense for the carriers and battle groups, participated in shore bombardments and rescued survivors including those of the USS Indianapolis. Also rescued POWs from Okinawa and downed pilots along the way. He finished his service as part of the early occupation force in Japan and was at the signing of the surrender in Tokyo Bay from afar. During battle he volunteered to a twin 40mm pom pom gun crew because of his tall stature and stamina - even though as an officer he was not required to do so. His battle station was just under a 5" gun emplacement - in one particular battle he raced to the guns in just his pants and shirt with no protective outer wear - the concussions from the big gun blew his shirt off. He had a very philosophical attitude about the dangers - he was only 22 and a bit of immortality played into his calmness about dying. He was the only man on the ship that volunteered to bunk in the bow section because he valued the solitude - everyone else stayed out for fear of mines blowing the bow off. The only time he experienced true fear was walking the streets of Tokyo just days after surrender alone with only his 45 - fearing he would be killed by snipers. After the war he re-joined civilian life and never talked about it again.... until I drilled him about it in the winter of his life. It was then that he gave me a treasure trove of pictures and mementoes form his three years at sea,

Unfortunately, I did not serve. I would like to acknowledge my late grandfather who served in the Army in WW1, a Silver Star and Purple Heart Recipient and my late Father who served in the Navy, 1944 and 1945 in the Pacific.

Thanks to all of the veterans.

Basic training at Fort Carson CO, then to the downtown Chicago 5th Army MRU (machine records unit) next to the stock yards and finally to Pirmasens, Germany for the last 18 months. I was 23 years old when I got drafted and feel lucky that there was no war going on at the time and that I had an office job (IBM punch card machine operator).

I was not, however I will always be so proud of my Father. Roger Foehringer Sr. He was a PFC with the 99th Infantry Division WWII He was 924th FA. 105 Howizer. He was Captured at Bulligen Belgium on Dec 17th 1944 by the 1st SS Panzer Unit. He spent 3 1/2 months as a POW in Germany until 4-1-45 (Easter Sunday) when he and 4 other GIs escaped and made it back to the front lines. He eventually made it home here to Chicago on VE day, May 8th. He wrote of his experience and spoke to many different organizations over the years. My brother and I accompanied my father back to Belgiun and Germany to retraced his steps in 1990 and it was truly amazing. He will always be my Hero !

Please let me know if you can identify the soldier walking in the center of this photo wearing the helmet and looking to his left. He is also carrying a pistol. I think he was my late father but don't know how to get any information. I have photos he took of Mauthausen but I would like to know if he is in that particular photo as it really looks like him.
Thanks to all who have served.

U.S. Army. Drafted in March '70 from lottery numbers pulled in '69. Fort Knox, KY for basic training, then to Ft. Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska until 2 year obligation was up. Was in the 808th Engineering Batallion. I was a specialist 4 (E-4) and my MOS was 52B20 (vehicle maintenance). Never got sent to Viet Nam, and happy about that.

There is nothing like the sound of a Round engine. To this day when I hear one flying over head I go look to the sky and try and find it. Love that sound. I have two CD's with nothing but Round Engine sounds. Love it. I wear a leg Prosthesis and have a special painted cover for it when I wear shorts. Painted sky blue, white wispy clouds, a C-124 flying across the sky, Royal Crest from my base in England (RAF Mildenhall), US air forces in Europe insignia on it, and the new USAF insignia. (Couldn't find a PIC of the old Insignia for the artist to copy.) Not another one like it. It was made especially for me. If I knew how to post PICs I would post a couple. Loving the sound and looks of the old piston engined Air Craft is pretty good since I was trained as an Jet Over two Engine mechanic.
If someone that knew how to post PICs on here I would be glad to send you a couple of PICs of my prosthesis leg socket cover. I think some would be interested in seeing it I just don't know how to do it.

X2 on those engines. Our work took us near or on the flight line some and all work stopped when one of those polished aluminum piston powered beauties taxied by. What a thrill. Same feeling as watching and hearing a giant steam locomotive on the move.

US Army National Guard, 49th Armored Division Texas Lone Star was my weekend warrior job for 6-years. I was in a detachment that provided helicopter maintenance for several companies here in San Antonio. We worked on Hueys, Cobras, & Kiowas back then. My unit had orders for Iraq back in 1991 but when the Pentagon found out we only had old stuff they rescinded the orders. I guess they didn't want two types of helicopters due to supply chain problems. I still think the Huey was better suited than the Blackhawk was for desert warfare. I was kind of old for that stuff anyway but I would have been happy to go even if it was hotter than Hades. The 49th was deactivated to the 36th Infantry Div back in the last decade.

I lost a friend and a fellow veteran today. Bill Morris, age 91, of Covington, GA. Bill had a twin brother, both served in Army Signal Corps. Bill was in the second wave to go ashore at Omaha Beach on D Day, right in rear of Infantry and light artillery, laying cable and setting up front line communications.

An interesting aside, another fellow in my Sunday school class, Sanford McDonald, 88, was on board ship on the way to an all out attack on the Japanese mainland when they received word that the Japanese had surrendered, and the war was over.

Never forget the greatest generation. I hope we never have to be faced with war again. Thanks Bill, and Sanford and all other Vets for your service to our country.

ALL who were in deserve thanks. Some were subjected to more danger than others, but most of that was simple timing. My nephew signed up for the marines, no wars going on, he didn't sign up to go be brave in a war zone. His first (or maybe it was the second) day of boot camp was 9/11/01. He was one of the first into Fallujah. Thank God he came home safe. My Brother was in the army in the 80's. They both had the same honor and intent going in.

ALL who wore the uniform get my thanks service is service.

USN, aboard the USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) (reconditioned WWII aircraft carrier). 1961 - Jn 1964. Worked on aircraft support equipment. Served 3 1/2 years since I was a "kiddie cruiser" (if you joined before 18 you got out the day before you turned 21). Barely missed Vietnam. Was discharged a month before the Gulf of Tonkin, in which the Ticonderoga was involved.

USAF early 1960's; 109th Air Lift Group, Base Engineering Unit .... thereafter ANG. Many good fellows there. My tame experience could not compare to my HS friend Bill who was ripping thru the clouds over north Nam on the wings of death. Thankfully he made it home.

I am proud to be a descendant of a family line that provided one Revolutionary War soldier, six Civil War soldiers, two Spanish-American War soldiers, one WW1 soldier, six WW2 service "persons" (one female) who served in all branches and theaters, and living relatives who have served in Afghanistan and elsewhere. Some didn't make it home; others sustained life-long disabilities. Bless them all.

This is a good idea, but probably should send this request directly to Ryan, just incase he misses reading this post.

Remember, veterans, that one of the freedoms that you were fighting to protect was Hoop's and petehoovie's rights to express their opinions as they wish, and, of course, your right to express yours. I respect that right and am very grateful for it even though I do not always agree with the opinions others express. We should all have the same respect for other's opinions that we want to have of our own, even while disagreeing with them. There was some rule called the Golden Rule that went something like that.

Gents
One of the great blessings we enjoy in our country is the ability to freely express our opinions. You may not agree with or even like Hoop's, but preserving that right is one of the reasons that I served. He has contributed to this forum on many topics and while I disagree with his comment on this one I stand by his right to make it. IMO negative ad hominem remarks serve no purpose and are out of line with the give and take we enjoy on this site.

Oh yeah, I know all about rights of everyone to express themselves. We were allowed to come on base in civilian clothes and then change to avoid being called baby killers and being spit at if we had to stop for gas or something. I was in during a very unpopular time to be in the service.( 70-76). I agree people have all kinds of opinions on any given subject and it is good to hear them, as it tells you a lot about them.

First of all, this is a Ford flathead forum. It's purpose is to discuss ... Ford flatheads.

Now we want to split the Fordbarn into different classes of members, those who served and are a "notch above" ... and those who didn't.

That will help us discuss flatheads better.

Funny how quickly some of us can take the good we did and turn it into division and hostility.

Sorry I mentioned it ... but, it's still a bad idea.

(I served and would have done it for free, but they said it would be unAmerican not to take the money.)

You guys are verging on getting this thread shut down. Remember, Ryan states there will be no politics discussed here. And some comments sounds a lot like politics to me.

Can't imagine how I could interpret the comments on this thread as political. Patriotic, yes; political, no. Acknowledging someone for their military contribution to this country out of respect is certainly not political. Nor is any member of the barn stating the years they served our country a political announcement.

It's interesting to me just how many of us Barners are former military. It must have something to do with the typical age of the guys interested in flatheads and flathead-powered rigs. I believe this common thread is one of the many contributors to the civility and sense of camaraderie that are so prevalent on the Barn. 'Proud to be a member.

Since I was the guy who made the suggestion of an optional service badge, I should point out that there are more badges than just military. There are Firefighter and Law Enforcement badges, EMT, and if somebody isn't proud of having served, or wants to forget about it, of course that's the choice they make.

I did not receive a PM back from Ryan, so I have no idea how he feels about it, but for a respectful discussion of what could have turned brutal, I think everyone is on the same page here, which pretty much is an indication of the respect the question deserves. The badges pictured below (There are more) are a little bigger than what is used on the other forum I post on, and it is attached at the bottom left, below the avatar, so folks can get a handle on you beyond your general location.

The only badge that should matter on this forum is the Classic Ford V8 logo -

What about the "Ruptured Duck", that was issued to a GI who was honorably discharged after WWII. After all, we are honoring Veterans, not V8s.

Sorry. I cannot post a photo. Look it up on Google if you don't know what it looks like.

Here you go Lawson. I still have my uncles WWII uniform with that honorable discharge pin attached. I was not sure what that pin represented until I looked this up on Google. Thank you! Learned something new.

Prof Henry,
Thank you very much for your attempt to recognize the Veterans on this site. As it appears, most of the Veterans served when our society had little regard for those who served. The locale of my duty locations loathed those in military uniform as well. Today, our country as a whole honors those who have served and are serving. Thank you again for recognizing our Veterans. Your Thank You is greatly appreciated! And I thank all those who served before me and after me!

Why do I suggest that veterans are a "notch above the rest of us"? I'm not a veteran so they are a notch above me. Here's why I say that.

We all have a job that serves someone. Often it seems that it is just our employer and the owners/stockholders of our employer. Usually we are also serving members of the public in some direct or indirect way. That's how most of our jobs are. I'm not suggesting that everyone employed by one of the branches of the armed forces thought every moment about the higher, patriotic cause in which they were involved. Many probably just thought that they were "just doing their job" like anyone else. But, who were they serving when they were "just doing their job"? Sure, they were contributing to whatever goals their unit or branch of the service had. But, ultimately, when all is said and done, they were all serving humanity as a whole and the cause of preserving freedom in the world for that humanity. To, me, who did not so serve, that is a higher level of service than anyone not a veteran has ever given. Whether every veteran who served thought about that higher cause every day doesn't matter. They did it. And, for that, I am eternally grateful and will honor them in my heart always. Yes, even Hoop, who doesn't really care about that honor. The story of "Saving Private Ryan" comes to mind as an illustration of how every veteran, in their own little job, helped save some private or public Ryan somewhere, including me. I salute you.

"Yes, even Hoop, who doesn't really care about that honor."

Where did you get that idea???? Please do not speak for me.

There are only a few of you that get it. Using military service to create a separate, "elite" group here on the Fordbarn is not an honor.

Answering to role call on Veterans Day here recognizes our vets and is entirely appropriate. We don't need a permanent "button" to separate Fordbarn into "us" and "them."

I did not serve to shine my own ass ... or to make myself a notch above. I always had the impression that I was doing it for someone else.

Military SERVICE, to me, means serving others, all Americans ... not serving myself.

Unifying America is a serious challenge. Start here.

Hoop, we get it. And we see it differently, that's all. It's like driving down the street and seeing an ARMY bumper sticker you like. You identify with that person and might give him (her) a thumbs up. Me, I love to see an old gent in a restaurant wearing a ball cap with a SeaBees insignia on it. I stop and we reminisce, it's good for the soul. I use a "Can Do" license plate frame, and it makes my day when someone recognizes it.

Old Henry/Craig , thank you for starting what I would call "The Veterans of Fordbarn Recognition Thread". I enjoyed reading when, where, and how other members served their country and maybe still are serving today. I was a little surprised at the number of members who readily came forward to post their service information, and also surprised that many of these members had rarely, if ever, posted on the discussion forum before. I think that is positive. It really wasn't that surprising, to me at least, that we did have a few "anti badge posting hecklers", but then they do deserve the right to voice their opinions as well. Actually, anyone who wants their service information to be known by other members can add this to their profile page. Also, for those who think this post had no relavence to Early Fords or the old car hobby in general, I can tell you that while many of us were serving, we were dreaming and planning what kind of old car we wanted to buy or build when we got back home. Many who servered were probably responsible in some way for some of us making it back home to live a life where we could enjoy many things, including these Early Ford Flathead V-8's.

Glad we got this back on track . . . I deeply respect and honor ALL the folks who have served in every branch of our services - I owe more than I can imagine to those.

Also, I do understand where Hoop is coming from - we do need to keep the focus of this site the way it is, the way Ryan intended, etc.. Once we start breaking ourselves into groups, then we can easily start to ruin the culture of this site (one - that has no color, no religion - other than Old Fords, no borders and no political opinion).

With that said - this thread is completely appropriate and we didn't get too far off track. Thanks for your service . . . again, I owe you all everything.

How about dear old dad? He is 96 but was 4F for WW2 due to no depth perception although he volunteered after Pearl Harbor. He stayed behind at the Boeing Company in the 40s and invented a gizmo to figure out why the flaps on B52s were failing on takeoff. Can't fly a B52 without flaps. Lots of heros out there for everyone.

U.S. Army 1964-1966. At the time is was a bitch but glad I did my bit and only wish more people showed some respect to those who did. In particular my hat is off to those guys, like Marcus, who got deep into the shit and have the Purple Hearts which prove it. Then, of course, there are the names which won't be on this board who did the most anyone could do.

petehoovie, I am in 100% agreement with you on this. when I was young
and stupid, I was against the draft. I will say now however that it is probably the best thing that ever happened to me. when I was drafted I decided I did not want to be in the army, so I joined the Air Force , before I was due to show up at the draft board for induction. made my Dad happy since he was a career Air Force man. the military taught me sel-reliance, humility, respect for others, and how to conduct one's self in general. I think everyone should be required to serve the minimum 2 years of service with a 4 year inactive obligation like all others have done. I also some times think that this should be required before you are able to vote, but that maybe carrying it a bit to far. just my .02. now back to the Fords

As a retired 24yr Air Force vet, the last thing I'd want to see is compulsory service. I had to deal with first-termers who were only there for the new fat GI bill and openly admitted they were only there for college benefits.

If I was King, no one could be admitted to full-time college under the the age of 23. 5 years of working in the real world and saving after high school should set them straight.

My Dad lied twice about his age to get into WWII (didn't let him in at 16, did at 17) - ended up in the Submarine Service.

I thank ALL of you for the freedoms, lifestyle and opportunities that I enjoy - because without the service and sacrifices of so many, I would not have the life I have today. My freedoms are and were never "free". THANK YOU and your families for your service.

US Army Air Corps, Army of Occupation Germany, 9 months Squadron Supply NCO for an air engineering squadron.

Gotta quote you barnstuf... I personally was given a high lottery number in '73 while working at a boatbuilding operation in Mattapoisett Mass., and they didn't call many guys up at that time. My dad had a similar situation, as his flight school was washed out when the war ended. He served in the army air corps during the occupation, stationed at Nordholz Germany. They flew Thunderbolts (is that what he's in in the photo?) He was a Mattapoisett native, but all the ancestors were from West Harwich on Cape Cod. Sisson Road. I have a very deep respect for all of you who served. I consider myself to be a very proud American.
