What Torque Rear Drum?
Howdy, Boys:
Just put my rear drums back on the '39 and need the torque spec for the axle/drum nut. I am much obliged for the information. Mike

Re: What Torque Rear Drum?
Spec copied from the Flathead Ford Techno Website:
The 'V8 Times', Sept/Oct 98 Issue, pages 46 and 48, quotes several Ford Service Letters and later corrections. The final direction on tightening axle nuts reads: "tighten nut 356074-S to 200 to 220 foot pounds; then continue tightening to the next castellation providing final resultant torque does not exceed 275 foot pounds."

Holy Toledo! Well, that's what I needed to know. I don't even know if I'm that strong anymore. Thank you.
Mike

Mike I think you made out pretty good. 195 lbs you can stand on the breaker bar, I'm 160 and I've gotta jump on it like a kangaroo.

Re: What Torque Rear Drum?
You want to have the tapers on both the axle and in the hub smooth, clean and dry. Any kind of burrs or nicks or oil or grease could cause problems down the road. Some people use valve grinding compound to lap them to each other. If you do this, be sure to keep it out of the bearings!!

Re: What Torque Rear Drum?
Pete has the answer. Smooth and dry. The long tapper is what drives the car. The key is just a saftey feature. G.M.
