35-36 Axle hsgs.
In the near future I am going to be on the hunt locally for a 35-36 axle hsg. Does anyone have a picture showing how to tell the difference between them and the 37-41's or have an easy way to ID them? Thanks Rod

The 35 and 36 will have a plate at an angle that the wishbone bolts on to. A 37-48 will have the spring mount as part of the housing, sticking out the back.
**32-34 will have a plate on the bottom along with the spring mount on the back. Here is the ones you'll need and they are for sale here - http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=676469 though its an OLD add

The tapered axle tube is the same diameter from28-36.On 37-48,the axle tube is 5/8" larger on both ends.That is why when I modified a 46 Columbia OD to fit my A,I used a '36 LH axle axle hsg which made it look more like an A rear end.

I will try to find some '37-41 axle housing pictures.
Note that on '35-'36 axle housings there is no actual right or left, one housing will work on either side. On '37-'41 there are right and left sides because of the attached spring hangers.

Thanks guys, will keep my eyes out for a set over the next few weeks. Going to put them on a 42-47 pickup center section using the 37-41 axles so I can have an open drive line.

The stock 35/36 wishbones will likely not be strong enough on their own to support the stress of the open drive set-up. Normally they would be aided by the torque tube and used mainly as triangulation.

I was not planning on using the 35-36 radius rods, but thanks for the info. I will be using the ones from the 40-41 rearend with abit of modification. Rod

Are we over-thinking this? 35 & 36 are the ONLY housings, from 28, through 48, that DO NOT have spring-mounts on them.

Actually Bob, I wish they had the spring mounts in the Model A position, but I can fab the spring perches, to put them where I need them. Just trying to make the 42-47 pickup rearend narrower. Mount location does not play a factor as I will have to fab what I need. Rod

If you're going to fab A spring mounts why pay the premium for the '35-6 (at least around here they go for a premium)? Just use the best units up to '41 you can find at the best price.

I wasn't planning on paying a premium. Many Ford axles found at farm auctions for scrap price or less. Likely I won't have to pay over $40 for the axle hsgs. Knowing what I am looking for and at is the key. Rod

If you need they A type spring perches, Jim at Specialty Ford Parts in Rosemead CA has excellent forged ones.

Thanks. Likely I will cut the perches and the top two bolt hole off of one of my 11 extra model A rearends, line them up straight with some dowels, clamp them and weld them up. But if all else fails I will look into them. Rod

Rowdy, when you find your '36 housings, they will likely be together with banjo and axles,so just use those axles and spider rather than looking for the later axles, same length, just match spiders to axles.

The 36 housings without the spring perches were the last to use the small carrier bearings/cups. You have to match what carrier bearings and cups you use, to what housings you use. The 37up housings (with 68-xxx part numbers) use the larger bearings/cups (68-XXX part numbers). You probably knew that but maybe it will clarify for others. It had me confused for a while.

Thanks, I have both NOS versions of the races and bearings. Likely everything new except the carriers, axles and a matched set of ring and pinion gears. Hopefully with 3 or 4 rearends to pick and choose parts from I will have a good used set of 3.54:1 gears.
Always good that we can learn from each others oversight and wrong assumptions. Playing with Model A's for nearly 30 years atleast putting it together won't be something I am foreign to. With what I have and can barter for locally I am curious how far I can go with this project for under $500. Alot will depend on how bad the 37 21 stud is inside. That could break the budget come spring. Other than the $35 cowl and the stuff I have spoken for or bought to change the dizzy it is all left over stuff that I have made my money back on and this is just what didn't sell or I decided to keep. The delivery sedan is stored away at the farm until I can afford to do the expensive parts. This is just a good winter time project on a tight budget mainly for my sanity. Rod

Rowdy, Laramie is just 300 miles from you, if you think you might ever go there, opt for 3.78 gears rather than 3.54. Also, it would take a good deal of luck to turn up a set of those tall gears within 3 or 4 banjos!
