Re: Stock Aluminum head repair
In the combustion chamber they must be welded. Having the skill required to do this is paramount. If the pits are not bad, I'd suggest ignoring them or perhaps gently smoothing them away. D not be too aggressive.

As Kube said ^^^ Also welding on those old contaminated castings is a crap shoot at best.Leave it be,bringing it back won't accomplish anything.

Re: Stock Aluminum head repair
To agree with Kube here... regarding skill required, etc... One of my local welders once told me the material used for the stock heads is, for him, difficult to weld. He did some head welding for me, and I could tell, he was having a lot of trouble. (I wondered if he really had the area clean.) In any event, this guy did a lot of aluminum welding for me, almost always on known material, and he was usually an excellent welder. So, I wonder if there is something about the material in stock al heads?

I don't know where you would get it and you would probably pay a fortune for it but I read somewhere that the NASCAR boys had a compound that they used for head repair that would stand up to anything. Worth looking into.

Re: Stock Aluminum head repair
Recently at a swap meet I found a set of old aluminum heads that had the water outlets repaired with high temp lab metal and then milled flat. Guy claimed that this repair holds up well and he has used it several times. He was not selling the lab metal product but was selling the aluminum heads. Repair looked good.
Wondering if anyone has used this product for repair of old aluminum heads. Coldtexan |
