Two days in Detroit, what to see?
I may have two whole free days in Detroit this fall, what Ford things are a must see, and how long will I need to spend at each venue.

Fairlane, Henry's house and grounds will take a day. The Henry Ford takes more than a day but a day there is well spent, at least you would have time to go thru the museum building itself.

The Edsel Ford estate in the Grosse Pointes, the Piquette Avenue museum (the first Ford factory), and if it is a weekday, the Rouge Truck assembly plant tour are other excellent choices.

If hungry, a good place is Vinsetta's Garage on Woodward Ave, in Royal Oak, MI.
Great food and it's an old original repair garage from the 30's converted to a restaurant, but original inside with a lot of old equipment, photo's and parts including an old school dragster. Sal http://vinsettagarage.com/ |

Re: Two days in Detroit, what to see?
Where and when in Detroit? Will you be in a suburb outside of Detroit or in the heart of Detroit? Henry Ford Museum is a great Museum and could be ran through in about 6 hours without spending much time at any area or slowly viewed in 12 hours. I think that is a realistic time. The Greenfield Village is attached on same property and also nice to see but not as neat as the Museum in my opinion. I've never toured the Rouge plant. Depending on the time of year there might be other venues scheduled like nostalgic drag racing, swap meets, or art shows nearby. That is why I asked where and when. When the time gets closer reopen this thread with some of your interests (family trip or alone?) and perhaps we might be able to suggest something more of your main interest

Greenfield & HF Museum is paramount absolute must and can take two days. The HF Museum is acres of vintage life. Inside walking. https://www.thehenryford.org/visit/henry-ford-museum/ Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum is located just south of Michigan Avenue (Interstate 94) at Oakwood Boulevard in Dearborn. #37 on the map. The museum is open daily, 9-5, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas. There is a price for admission. Official Detroit Guide https://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/detroit/index.htm Evenings Avoid the casino. Dinner is cheaper elsewhere. Drive around while it is light out. Pop over to Winsor Canada. eh? Last edited by Paul Bennett; 04-30-2017 at 04:57 PM. |

Re: Two days in Detroit, what to see?
Another great place to eat in Detroit, if you like BBQ, is Slows Barbque Restaurant. We had dinner there the last time we visited the Henry Ford, and their BBQ was really good. As I recall, it was not that far from Dearborn.

Re: Two days in Detroit, what to see?
The picture posted by Petehoovie is of the old Packard Factory which last produced Packards in 1956. You can see the Water Tower and other parts of the building shown in Pete's photo. Found this information on the Internet:- The long-awaited redevelopment of Detroit's old Packard Plant site could get under way in the spring, a representative for the property's owner said Tuesday. The initial $23-million first phase of the project would involve a single building on the blighted 40-acre former factory grounds on the city's east side. The four-story, 121,000-square-foot structure once housed the defunct automaker's administrative offices. Plans call for heavy renovations to transform the building at 1580 E. Grand Blvd. into new commercial office space. |

Other than the obvious Henry ford, the Stahl museum in shelby township, and the Hudson Museum in depot town.

Re: Two days in Detroit, what to see?
The Ypsilanti Auto Heritage Collection. The premises was a Hudson Dealer until the end. While not exactly in Detroit, it is fairly close and well worth a visit. |

Re: Two days in Detroit, what to see?
The Stahl museum is in Chesterfield, MI, not Shelby Twp. It's south of 26 mile road, just west of Gratiot.

Re: Two days in Detroit, what to see?
Please note: if thinking of visiting Fair Lane, Henry's last home, check to see if it is open yet, as they have been doing MAJOR restoration work on it.
