408W(351 stroked) & C-4 or 400M & C-6
Considering either a 351/408 stroker & C-4 or a 400M (Cleveland) & C-6 for my 1956 Bird. Objective is strong street performer (I just gotta have at least 400 CID) for fewest (<$6,000?) bucks. Anyone know of off-the shelf headers for either combo to fit my bird? Will the C-6 fit without mods to the firewall, etc.? Any other info? <table><tr><td><font face="arial"> |

The winsdor based engine is the way to go. The 400M is way to heavy, and the C-6 is a lot bigger and heavyier than the C4. In the bird the lighter engine trans combo will make a lot of difference. If you want a lot of power then consider going all the way to 427 cu in with the winsdor. I have a 427 inch winsdor in a 1951 ford coupe with a 4 speed, its awesom. My opinion is the winsdor. don't even consider the modified. <table><tr><td><font face="arial"> |

Thanks. I was under the impression that the 400 was a modified 351, and thought it would weigh about the same. Wanted a "427" since they came out in '63 and the 351/427 stroker seems like a way to have one, since the FE version is too old and heavy. <table><tr><td><font face="arial"> |

The 400 is the tall member of the Cleveland family, but is a completely different casting. It has nothing in common with a windsor. To confuse it all, Ford then de-stroked the 400 and called it a 351M after 351C production ended. 400 and 351M are part of ford's 335 engine series. <table><tr><td><font face="arial"> <ul>[*]400 build up link[/list] |
