Default AA Spoked wheels

When did Ford AA trucks switch from wire wheels to Budd type steel wheels? Thanks.

1928 was the only year for the AA spoked wheels , though I imagine there were a few early 29's that still had them . Old Henry liked to use the old parts up!!!

Some 1931 AA models had wire wheels, just not the same wheels as the '28 models had.

And in Canada, the 29 model CAA used wood-spoke wheels & Timken rear ends, open DS & cable brakes.

28 had wire wheels. 29 had concave disk wheels with 6 holes around the perimeter. 30 used budd wheels, with the deep offset so they could be mounted as duals in the rear. The front hubs and drums were much larger than 28-29, to increase brake size, and to accommodate the large offset of the budd wheels. The bud wheels mount on the front with the offset as convex, the 29 wheels mounted as concave.

I never knew about the concave/convex wheel mounting, did this require different hubs/drums? Just wondering if the tire kingpin spot on theroad was the same. I remember there were different hubs available for the 1928 wire wheels, left and right hand threads with several lig nut designs. Bob

So, did they have dual rear wheels in 28 with the spoked wheels?

1928-29 AA trucks used a Model A car front axle and brakes with different hubs and brake drums. The hubs only fit the 1928 AA 20" wire wheels with the small hubcaps and the 1929 6 hand hole concave disc 20" wheel. The 28-29 trucks with the car front axle used the worm drive rear axle.
The 1930-31 chassis with the larger front brakes and Bevel gear rear axle used 3 different styles of the 20" 5 hand hole Budd disc wheels. The 30-31 front axle was bigger and stronger than the car axle that it replaced. The 5 hand hole Budd wheels can be used as single or dual wheels on the rear axle. From January 1930 to about June of 1930, Ford used the 28-29 body style on this chassis.
Some deluxe AA trucks also had a 20" wire wheel with a larger hub cap than the 1928 wire wheel. These wire wheels require special hubs and brake drums. These are hard to find.

There was one more style rearend used, it looked like the car rearend, just much bigger. I have seen it on a 29/e30 style AA, but I know no actual facts from when to when it was used and gearing. This is a little off the spoke wheel question but closely related, maybe someone could add some details.

The 1928 AA I had 25 years ago was a good original with the bevel gear rear, I believe this allowed for higher highway speeds. My truck was a full fendered rack body with U.S.Mail on the doors and branded into two tires. It would take a lot of searching to find the restoration photos. Bob

Thanks Bob, you can see the rear fenders as well. I sold it to someone locally and he let me drive it after the restoration, it's a good looking truck.

Bill,

Just when did the AA-3105 Front Spindle Assembly come into effect?

It is not listed in the October 1928 Parts Price List (PPL) but is listed in the June 1929 PPL..

Thanks.

Good thought Bob C!

Now why didn't I think of that?

Must be getting lazy in my old age or can't wait to get married on March 24!
