Scott, it must be noted that the 2LF battery case is no longer able to conceal the Optima due to the redesign several years ago. The 2HF is tall enough, but not correct for those applications having 2LF as original equipment. Those who do still use the 2LF with the Optima do so by fabricating a skirt around the base of the case.

Bruce, if you're handy, you can do it yourself to save some bucks. Start with a script acid battery from one of the reproducers, use it till it dies, then cut it open to insert the Optima. It's not rocket science and gives you the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

If you got the battery via mail order such as Amazon (and others), your hurting. They will not accept a return of a used battery nor will shippers knowingly ship it. If you try to take it back to a local dealer they will tell you to take it back where you got it. I called Optima for help and got the run around. They will not accept a returned battery. That was over a year ago. Hopefully, things have improved.

Generally, these batteries are trouble free but I would get a clear understanding of the warranty before I purchased one.

I bought an Optima from Amazon in early 2014. In February of this year, I was attempting to remove it from the car and broke one of the posts off. Called Optima and was told that wasn't covered under the warranty, but that I should try to work it out with Amazon. Applied for a refund from Amazon (reason: defective merchandise) and was immediately issued a full refund, which I used to purchase another from them. Arrived in two days. Can't ask for better service than that.

The last two 6V Red Top Optima batteries that I bought, one in '13, the other in '14, were $115.00 each with free shipping from Amazon.com. The one in my Avatar '35 fordor spins the engine at startup like a 12V battery. I don't even bother to keep a maintaining charger on them during the 4-5 winter months it stays in the garage, found it to be unnecessary. I am now thinking about buying a 12V version for my modern pickup because of the short life I have had on the last two lead acid batteries.

I mounted my Optima on my `35 under the hood on the frame using existing holes. Not kosher but handy. I also installed a cut off switch so in seconds I can disconnect/connect the battery. So far the battery has performed flawlessly.

In my opinion, the best investment you can make for a 6 volt battery. Steve

For you early V8 guys with batteries mounted under the floor, the Model A vendors sell an optima battery hold down that you may adapt for your use. I have one on my Model A.

Honest I have done none of the following, but have contemplated this so here is some resources I have come across:

Some instructions I found on how to make your own cover from an old battery. Go to Northern Ohio Regional Group #20 website Tech tips and see PDF for "Optima 6V Battery in a Ford Script Case"

http://norgv8club.org/norg/index.php...norg-tech-tips

Other options:

Quail Services

And to complete the look, Ford script battery decals:

That "Battery Décor Kit" will fit any 6V car battery, not just NAPA. Still available for 35.44 delivered to your door. Contact Anthony Saliba at JTNS Products in NJ, 973-823-9920 or [email protected]

That is good to know. Usually with Summit, anything over $99 is free shipping.

FYI: Optimas are also lead acid batteries, just with a twist on the configuration for the lead element.

Yes, technically they are also lead acid batteries, but the difference is......

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries like OPTIMA® Batteries, help you avoid issues like spillage that can occur with traditional flooded batteries. Sealed AGM batteries do not sulfate or degrade like flooded batteries do, since they are not vented to the atmosphere. The absorbed glass mat design holds the electrolyte in suspension while keeping it in constant contact with the active lead material on the plates. This results in higher efficiency when both discharging and recharging, since there is more surface area contact between these critical elements.

Here is the Optima 6V set up in my 1937 Ford.
A strap with a piece of wood. Painted black.
It does the job.

When I restored the 36 Cabriolet the last place I wanted my battery was under the floor--So I put the narrow Optima 6V at the engines right side, Very easy to access! Great Battery!
