Who carries a spare clutch arm?
Last week I spent 4 days at Whitewater State Park, and on the first day someone broke a clutch shaft arm before a tour. Luckily one of our club members carries both styles. This is the third time I've heard of someone breaking a clutch arm. This was a repro and was a bit thinner than an original arm, and was installed just a couple weeks prior to breaking. I don't know if the other two broken arms were original or repro arms, but I'd trust the original arm more than a repro. I do recall one guy telling me he drove home with a curved jaw Vice Grip clamping it together.
With all the spare parts I've seen listed that people carry for tours, I don't recall a clutch arm being one of those listed. Last edited by Tom Wesenberg; 10-19-2012 at 10:13 PM. |

Re: Who carries a spare clutch arm?
Tom, Ive carried one since The Around The World Tour,30 years ago. It was a part of our parts list then. I have not needed one for myself but others have needed one while we toured since. Maybe 3 or 4 times. Folks have been very good about replacing parts that I've provided, soon after the end of the tour.

Re: Who carries a spare clutch arm?
I carry two originals, one of each design; started carrying them after one of the cars traveling with us lost the clutch arm along the Oregon coast about three years ago. There are two configurations, the first one was keyed # 13 woodruff key with a 3/16" X 1 1/4 plain pin until June 29, the second one did not have a key and used a 5/16" X 1 1/4" groove pin and was used from June 29 until end of production. So look at which one you have.
The reproduction arms are known for poor quality!! Last edited by 160B; 10-19-2012 at 02:48 PM. |

Re: Who carries a spare clutch arm?
I have a friend who broke a repro one on a tour The welds had no penitration
I think those repro ones could be another candidate for" Vinces hall of Shame" Better to weld up the hole in an original and drill it out to the right size!!! John Cochran |

Re: Who carries a spare clutch arm?
The adjustable yoke has also broken. Include a replacement trunion, and pin. That is the part the arm hooks up to. Bob

Re: Who carries a spare clutch arm?
I would think most carry a AAA/CAA emergency towing.
I also carry original spare clutch arms in my "A" vehicles. Who wants to cut a tour or vacation short with towing, when it's such an easy fix on the road?

Re: Who carries a spare clutch arm?
My brother called one day to say his clutch would not disengage, and the pedal felt spongy. I told him to check the throwout arm, and sure enough it was broken and peeling off the shaft. I guess I better go check mine. Maybe keeping a modern one with extra weld would be a good idea.
Regarding the differences in arms, there was also another arm in 28, for the multi disk clutch, and it was longer than arms for single disk clutches. |

Re: Who carries a spare clutch arm?
On my 30 coupe I installed the clutch arm from a 28 multi disc and it has much less pedal pressure & has been fine for the last 14,000 miles. You do have to keep the free play adj at just enough to keep T O brg from turning all the time.

Re: Who carries a spare clutch arm?
" I do recall one guy telling me he drove home with a curved jaw Vice Grip clamping it together."
That was me Tom. The original levers crack along the bottom right through the pin hole, usually without warning. Personally, I have only seen four of these break on tours in over 30 years. The curve jaw vice grips did work pretty good to clamp the lever back to the shaft and the clutch worked good for the nearly 100 mile trip back home. Re: Who carries a spare clutch arm?
I have an original release bearing arm that has a crack, but was still working OK when I took it apart.
