Default Pinion backlash ?

Now finally going through the final stages of the rebuild of my 37-40 diff.
I took a good guess with the gaskets and I think I'm close straight up its six to seven thou .Is that to tight or ok? I have one manual that says no more than ten thou, and Tom eddy's book says it's the least critical part of the build and so long as you have something it's all good?

Anyone? Thinking it must be close I can get an audible clunk out of it, so can't be too tight?

I have never rebuilt a 37 -40 differential, but have rebuilt a fair share of 70's thru about 95 rear differentials, from that experience I would say .006" - .007" would be ideal, you could go as low as .003" but I would be shure to check that minimum amout of clearance in about 8 spots to spot any runout. I would agee that your ring gears drive and coast pattern's are more critical than runout to avoid noise.

Regards,

Brian

When we set up the old rear ends, we set up a dial indicator at the pinion shaft and look for no less than .003, or more that .008. If you need more, increase the gasket thickness between the left hand housing and the banjo. Decreasing the thickness decreases the backlash. What ever you add or take from one side should be added to the other side to preserve the differential bearing setting.

That's how it's done.. I've been lucky that I chose three gaskets that worked perfectly for me first time, took a guess for the pinion backlash and nailed it with the blue gasket. I can finally do the total assembly now.
