Default Tire Pump A-17053 A-1

I have a Ford tire pump with a 3/8" hole about 6.5" up from the cast
base. Seems dumb, but, is that correct?

How is the tube attached to the base? Somebody soft soldered it, not
a clean job !

Thanks, Dudley

There is not a hole in the tube. The tube was seemed, vertically, and is sometimes difficult to see, but no hole in the tube. The base was perhaps pressed on, if it was soldered, the solder would not show.

Thanks Don,

The pump I have is of the first, in your first photo(single Ford script), everything
matches except for that darn hole and the poor solder job. When I get some time
I going to fix it up.

If I read Dons post correctly, since you have a CAST steel base, the tube should have threads on both sides and no solder or brazing.

Still wondering about the hole? Why would it be there?

The Model A tire pumps with a stamped steel base had a 1-1/4" outside diameter metal cylinder tube with a seam that ran lengthwise of the tube and was threaded at the top end of the tube. The bottom end is brazed to the stamped steel base and a cap screws onto the top end.

There was no hole drilled into the steel cylinder tube.

Some of the cast steel bases have Ford script on one side only. Some of the cast steel bases have ribs on both sides, with a similar look to the stamped steel bases that have ribs. Some stamped steel bases have four ribs and some have five ribs.

Cast steel bases with Ford script on both sides are Model T.
Tire pumps with a cylinder tube larger than 1-1/4" are not considered correct for MARC & MAFCA Fine Point Judging.

Second photo: Bottom view of stamped ribbed steel base on left, and cast ribbed base on right.

Third photo: Stamped steel ribbed bases. Five ribs on left, four ribs on right.
Don, did only the first type (threaded cylinder) have the tube out of brass?

The threaded tube to base tells me a lot about the repair, the hole is dumb.
If you get it for free you can't snivel.........much.........thanks.
