The back of the body hinges above the rear window. At first I too thought it was an airport limo setup. However, it is set up for hearse duty.

That is a really neat looking car. I have no idea what anyone would do with it though.

The car is so unique! I love it. I hope a restorer buys it to return to an original hearse. Could even be used in weddings. Cheers - Bob

Over the years there have been several articles written about hearse' and ambulances. 1952henry is correct that it was probably built by Seibert. It seems they were the company to go to for these custom type vehicles. They are fairly rare, once they ended their useful life no one wanted them. Hot Rodder's and restorers all thought the body type was ether too morbid or the vehicle itself was just too big. Check out the V-8 Times archives for articles.

Oh I don't know, I'd rather take my last ride in something like that, rather than one of those plastic new cars.

A few years ago there was a 1941 Ford for sale in the South Jersey area. It was a side loader, I think that the "B" pillar was removable. The seats from a sedan had been installed, so it was hard to see its original use. Such vehicles were of the "first call" variety. That is they picked up the deceased at their home, and brought the body to the funeral home for preparation. Professional Car Society keeps track of the use of these odd and rare body types,.

There is a funeral home in Fairbanks that has a model A hearse. They only bring it out for the summers of course.
Sounds kinda morbid, but a lot of folks that pass here in the winter, don't get buried till June when the ground thaws.

There was a 48 Mercury hearse advertised in the NZ Hot Rod magazine in the 70's.

You registered just to say that? And who the hell would want a hearse in their wedding?
