Default 6 Volt Coil?

When substituting a modern tube type coil for the original 1942 - 48 type just wondered if you guys had a preference? A part number would be helpful. Thanks fellas!

Just curious, why do you want to replace the original type coil? If you have it rebuilt you will never find a modern coil of equal quality. I've tried they don't exist.

I need one while I'm having the original rebuilt and didn't think it would hurt to have a spare.

NAPA has them. You will need to consider if you need one with built in resistor or not.

If you are using it for a spare and temporary replacement then you want one close to the original in resistance (primary ohms value).

It has the external resistor. Yes sir. I was hoping somebody might have a part number for the one that might be.

I don't, but here are some resistance values from Bubba's site:

1. Primary Resistance= Low ohms scale should be less than 4 ohms, Ford typically .6-.7 ohms

2. Secondary Resistance = High ohm scale should be 3000 to 6000 ohms, Ford typically 3500-5000 ohms

That should help. Just take a volt meter with you to your auto store, have them look up a coil for the year you want and then check it.

JSeery, I like that you post illustrations with your technical help. That's a great help to many people. Thanks!

Napa/Echlin does not list a coil for 1942 to 1948 V8 cars nor trucks.

Might try an early VW or other 6 volt car and check the primary resistance.

NAPA won't have the specific coil for your car but they do have "Universal" tube type 6V coils that will work if you get one with the correct built in resistor. Use the excellent specs posted above by SJeery.

We use the IC7 NAPA coil with the 6 volt units.......... very good coil.......
IC12SB is the 12 volt version....

That's the one I used on my '41. After having my original re done by Skips I but it back on. Early in this post I went to look for the NAPA coil in my parts stuff but couldn't find it. I didn't want to post anything without a part number. It worked just fine but I wanted the original.

Skip usually takes about (1) week only.

Skip usually does it (1) week. Send it on Mondays Mail and you may have it back by Friday or Saturday -- maybe Monday at the latest. My experience and I will wait if need be! jmo kerk

The IC7 is listed in the NAPA Echlin parts book for Fords from 1928 to 1955 but this is only true if used with an adapter for distributor mounted coils. If you use a can type coil like an IC7 Echlin, you will need to bypass the OEM ballast resistor or it won't get enough current to the coil. Take care with the OEM ballast. You will have to reconnect it after your rebuilt OEM coil gets back.

So what is the primary resistance of the IC7? I find substitute coil references in the 1.2 ohm range but not sure if that is the correct range for the IC7.

It's not in the latest Echlin parts book so I don't know what the primary resistance is. It just lists all the OEM part numbers it replaces. The list is long and includes many manufacturers. This is a very old Echlin number so it was likely one of their first batch of products back in the day. The coils for the 8BA types were 1.05 to 1.15 Ohms resistance.

The IC7 is listed for some 49 and up Ford and almost all 52 and up.
