Last year for 4 cyl
We have been having a discussion about the availability of the 4 cyl. I think they were still available in '34 any thoughts?

Re: Last year for 4 cyl
They are probably still available in 2015. You need a little more definition of "4 cylinder". The last year of the Model B engine in US domestic automobile (not industrial engines) production was 1934 and most of them ended up in trucks. There was another 4 cylinder in trucks (a different engine from the Model B) in about 1940. Foreign production (especially Russia and Europe) used the Model B (or an improved version) into the fifties. Don't make any bets your friends may be setting up by playing with words.

Re: Last year for 4 cyl
One last detail to add to the above is that the Model B four was still produced in the U.S. until 1941. Those were made for service replacements and use as industrial engines.
Double overhead cam fours are used today by Ford throughout the world in both cars (all Fords and even most Lincolns) and trucks. The 2 liter turbo-charged four cranks out nearly 250 horsepower. |

Re: Last year for 4 cyl
My wife and I have a 2015 Ford Fusion with the 4 cylinder eco boost engine. I am very happy with it's performance thus far.
DavidG has it correct about being produced up through 1941. I have seen them in '40-'41 pickups. Mac Van Pelt's web page will have the information as well. |

Re: Last year for 4 cyl
My wife has a new Cadillac with turbo charged 4 cylinder, it's a little rocket! When I was a kid in the late 40's we had a Baldwin combine with a Ford 4 cylinder and a Ford tractor with a 4 cylinder, still have the tractor.

Re: Last year for 4 cyl
After Ford dropped the V8-60 after 1940, they offered the 9N tractor engine as an option in pickups and delivery trucks for a year or two. If you're not familiar with this engine, it is basically one bank of a 239 V8. Bore and stroke are identical. Pistons, rings, valves and lifters are interchangeable. Thin wall sleeves like some V8's had were used. A special front casting and bellhousing matched right up the V8 trans and front motor mounts so a V8 conversion was a bolt-in.

Re: Last year for 4 cyl
we also had a combine with a model A engine , it was a 1948 model, Historians have told me for many years they used the combine engines to restore their model A's, my late father also swore the old combine we had was a model A 4 cyl.

Re: Last year for 4 cyl
Gleaners, made by Baldwin, used the Model A engine. Some refer to them as galvanized re-seeders.

Re: Last year for 4 cyl
I know the motors were made for quite a few years, but what was the last year the "B" type four was used in a US production car?

Re: Last year for 4 cyl
I have one of those '41 pickup's 4 cylinder 9N that is equivalent to tractor engine but is equipped with a fuel pump for the pickup; tractor was gravity-feed gasoline.

The last Model A Ford was put together with a 4cyl in 1941 and had a mixture of parts. This car was here in East TN several years ago and now is in AL
