Default 1936 Noisy Fan

I'm getting a sound like a low pitched siren from the front of the engine when I rev it up. I took off the fan belt and it went away. Could it be the pitch of the fan blades?

It could be the fan, but I'd bet it's the generator itself. Assuming a stock set-up, unbolt the fan from the pulley and run the generator to see if the noise still persists....report back. DD

When was the last time you oiled the rear bushing on the generator

look at the fan blades while turning ---does it look like they wobble, do any blades have a different angle ---any nicks in the blades

there are different pulleys and fans too ,a small pulley will make the fan turn faster, the heavy duty truck fan will make more noise

the belt could be worn and slipping

I removed the fan and the noise disappeared. Where can I get a correct fan?

In addition to your report that the noise went away I would like to know from the members what caused this? What could happen to the fan to cause this out of the clear blue ? At least you didn't say anything happened.

I bought the car a few months ago and it made the noise right from the start. I don't think anything happened to the fan. I just think that it's not the correct fan for a passenger car.

I would suggest the same source as other original parts, swap meets, HAMB & Barn for sale and ebay. I have purchased several fan assemblies from ebay.

The fan blades are at a 45 degree angle

Inspect any fans you find, even NOS fans, very closely. Any inconsistency can set up a wobble/vibration that can send a fan blade up through your hood, which coincidentally will crack your intake manifold and chop into your radiator. The only good side of this happenstance is that your insurance will pay for all but the replacement of the fan itself, with no deductible on Comprehensible coverage.

Be sure the pictures you are trying to upload are within the size limits ~500kB.

Hard to tell from the pics you posted if the fan has had straightening done to it.Any chance you can borrow a fan to try before you buy another? There might be a Ford V8 club member near you that can help.

The early generators with the fan mount pulley had a tapered roller bearing at the front of the generator. Without the load of the fan, it might quiet down when spinning......yet still be going bad. A trial with another fan might help narrow this down. New fan and no noise.....you've got a bad fan. New fan and noise remains.....check out the front bearing more closely.

Hi there, Mac VP is correct here. Your fan looks good and more than likely is not the problem. You could try a few drops of engine oil into the front generator oiler. Otherwise remove and dismantle the generator (note the order the stepped washers and felts are assembled in) and wash out the double tapered roller bearing or if badly pitted on rolling surfaces replace both bearings. Although these bearings are usually just oiled I opt to repack them with high temp wheel bearing grease just like in your front wheel bearings. Then on reassembly adjust the threaded ring against the bearings to remove all end play while allowing the bearings to turn freely. Reassemble generator and refit to engine. Good luck, regards, Kevin.
