Adjusting brakes
I’m trying to help a friend adjust his brakes on a 1936 ford car. I have a little knowledge gained on doing my model A but the 36 is not a model A. Can anyone give me advice on a novice adjusting brakes on a 36 car. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jerry

Re: Adjusting brakes
Often brake equalizers (floaters) are installed and they have a completely different adjustment procedure, With equalizers installed the original adjusters are removed which leaves the threaded hole for the original adjusters empty and open. If the square head adjusters are in place, you most likely have the original style adjusters as shown below.

Re: Adjusting brakes
Ford Service Bulletins are invaluable for this
Ebay: Vintage Ford Service Bulletin 1936 December ABC Brake Adjustment available listings and cheap I use a CD version when I do my 36 truck and they work as intended. Pat |

Re: Adjusting brakes
I remember, when removing the adjusting stem wedge by screwing it all the way through the backing plate, there was so much gunk inside that it barely moved. Use penetrating oil first. The stem will finally hit the plug and pop it out from the front. It is much easier to remove the plug this way than trying to pry it open from the front. terry

Re: Adjusting brakes
This is done, of course, after removing the brake springs and brake shoes.
