That usually happens after the drain pan has been removed and the new oil runs on the ground or shop floor. I saw one guys A several yrs back that never needed oil in the twenty yrs that he had it. Some one installed a grease fitting in the plug hole on the side of the block and He just gave it a few pumps of grease every time he took it out for a spin. LOL True story.

Don't worry about it. I'm just turning 75 and I can't even remember 71.

Ed, not to worry - I did that when I was sixteen and boy was my father mad when four quarts of oil went all over the black top driveway. I was worried about buying more oil!
It's all good.

I changed oil on my 1972 chevelle when i was a teen dumped in way more then It should have. ran the motor and blew out rear main seal. Oh what fun lifting a motor up and changing oil pan gaskets and rear main seal I will not do that again.

It seems it really doesn't matter the age. Us humans always will make mistakes. Some here on this topic have good advice; Don't walk away when changing oil, slow down, think!, take your time and try to take your mind off any other thing during an important process. I even line up the empty oil bottles as I fill an engine to make sure I put the right amount in. Oil really is the lifeblood of an engine.

At least you didn't pay for the "un-fill" at the lube shop like a couple of my buddies parents did and trashed their cars. The spilled oil is cheap compared to a rebuild, good thing you found it. As Red Green says, "We're in this together and we're all pulling for ya" sorry not exact because wifey-poo is doing something naughty!!!! I know too much info. At least I'm only typing and not doing something important.
