Default Electric cooling fan question?

Should I wire the cooling fan to ignition switch or directly to battery. Is having the fan run after you turn the ignition off a good or bad idea?

I would use a relay. The ignition swith will kick the relay in. but it will draw its electric from the battery. If you want the fan to run after you shut the engine off it better be 12 volt.

The harness for the fan has a relay built into along with a 30 amp fuse for 12V system; what I want to know is going to the ignition switch or straight to the battery a better idea.

You want the feed side of the relay to bypass the ignition switch. The wire to trigger the relay "on" can be fed by the ignition switch, a toggle switch, or a fan thermostat. I would think a thermostat would be preferable, I understand the fans are not designed to run all the time.

I don't have a relay in front of me to tell you the numbers on the terminals to connect to. It should be available on Google if your harness didn't come with a schematic.

If your thermostat monitors radiator temp you might can let it run with ignition off. If it is driven by a sensor on the engine the fan will run a long time before it shuts off.

Am going with hot side direct to battery and, thermostat control mounts in cylinder head, will power up with the ignition switch.
