'40 steering gear
'40 coupe disassembled (most parts rebuilt). Today, I took the steering column (not yet rebuilt and) bolted it to the painted frame in order to evaluate the condition of the steering gear. sitting straight ahead very small amount of free play, but it has the old hard grease in it.
Should I disassemble.....? or try to flush it......? and how? suggestions........? in dis-assembly, anything to beware of....... many thanks fordman |

Re: '40 steering gear
you are probably going to find some wear on the pitman shaft and the sector worm, bearings, etc, remove the cover, clean out all you can and then soak in a bucket of kerosene, heat it up, either in the sun or with a blower heater and it will help to flush it out.

Re: '40 steering gear
Fordman, Rebuild it. They are not that hard to rebuild. The only parts that go bad are the bronze bushings and the wear on the sector and the worm gears. They are both available from Macs or Carpenter. Then you can get all the old hard grease out of there completely. I did my 47 truck and what a difference. My 40 will be later this spring. Ken
