Default Oil Pump Shield

Is the 'oil pump shield' a worthwhile buy? While I can't really make much sense out of their purpose by the vendors', I suspect they are made to help corner-up and possibly make more oil for uptake by the pump... but just don't know. Would someone please shed some truth on how it works and possibly their experiece with this device. Thanks... Saltman!

As thrifty as Henry was it would not be there if he didn't think it was necessary.

if you put one on, you will need a 31 oil pan and dipper tray. Otherwise the shield is too long and will push the tray down or interfere with installation of the pan to the block unless you shorten it. I don't bother with them unless its a 31 or a B pan. See the Service bulletins segment on the new pan.

My engine is a diamond block with the original frame # stamped on it. So how do I determine if the pan is a 31 or not? I have the shield, but have never used it (forgot it last time it was apart.)

the tray in most pre 31's has the bead which snaps into the pan in the center line of the flanges along the sides of the tray. On the late 31 and B tray, the upset is above the center line. Page 576 of the Service Bulletins explains that the center bead of the tray was raised 1/8th inch to lower the tray into the pan the corresponding amount. If your engine came with the splash shield installed and you have not changed the tray, it should work OK.
