Default How many out there run Stromberg 97's

There are all kinds of surveys done on the Ford Barn. So here is one. Who runs the old Stromberg 97 carburetor or more than one on their Flathead? Just how many are still being used to date? I guess even 84's would count. Thanks for looking and taking time to answer. Chet

I managed to send 134 of them out in 2009. Not counting the two on my own junker...
Have not tallied 2010 yet, but should be close to the same.
Thank you H&H, Flathead Jack, HAMB & Fordbarn!

Not trying to be negative, but what is the advantage to the 97 over the Ford 94? I can CLEARLY see the dis-advantage. Price!

The 94's can be had for $20-40 at swap meets. The 97's are four times that much for a core.

Is there a black and white performance advantage or is it a handed down legend status thing?

Just asking because I REALLY want to know.

This could end up being one of those personal opinion things. To me it's dependant on what some think is "real" traditional. The 97 was the predominant '40s standard. The 94 came along later so represents a later era. Personally the 97s I posted above are on my late '40s theme roadster. My late '50s theme '36 has a pair of 94s, but that's just me.

If I remember corectly, and I believe I do, The 94's performed much better and seemed to be more reliable than the 97 on the old dirt track modified class stock car racers we all drove in the 50's bill

Kevin, I was going to run 3 94's on my Flatty. They would not fit my Offenhauser intake manifold without a little creative grinding on the carbs for clearance between the carbs. Charlie ny (frequent poster here) rebuilt 3 chrome carbs for me that I picked up at a swap meet. I had considered trashing them after but Charlie said he'd tackle them. Tackle them he did! I thought they were 97's (all markings had been removed by a plater years ago). Charlie informed me that they were 48's which he said was a better carb for what I was doing. They fit great on my intake. They came out beautiful and each carb was road tested by Charlie! Dennis/Arkansas

I can only speak for myself, but the 94's I've had all ran like crap. I finally went with a 97 from Uncle Max and haven't had to touch it in almost two years.

Worth every penny.

So.... Is there a performance advantage to the 97, or is it just tradition?

That being said, when did the 94 come along?

I've had flathead engines back to '37 models and none of them had a 97. They all had 94's on them.
