Default Is it unusual for a Rex-A-Co water temp gauge to fail?

Approximately two years ago, I purchased a Rex-A-Co water temp gauge from Bratton's and it has suddenly failed. I was riding in my car yesterday and suddenly the temp reading began to drop from 180 degrees to the lowest point on the gauge and has not registered since. I've checked both ends and they are in tact, my cooling system is full, and my Motometer is reading correctly. I am wondering if it is unusual for this simple, mechanical-type, Rex-A-Co water temp gauge with the traditional bulb sensor to fail? I realize what I need to do now is drain some radiator coolant, unplug the bulb from the radiator hose neck, and dip it in a cup of hot water to confirm the guage is dead.
(I noticed in the Bratton's catalog that it is guarenteed for 1 year, but I've had it for about 2-3 years.) Your thoughts and experiences are welcomed here; thanks.

I went through 2 of these. 1 failed and one never registered the temp correctly. I bought one at tractor supply with actual numbers on it and it's worked great ever since.
