Starter quit
I have a stock 12V starter in the pickup that is not new but, has been working just fine. On trying to start the motor all I got was a click. I disconnected the vehicle battery cable and jumped the starter with a spare battery. No response. I took it out and removed the armature. The brushes are like new and there is no visible evidence of anything wrong. What usually happens in this case? Does Napa have the parts needed?

Re: Starter quit
Check the field windings. I had one go open. It produced the same symptom. Just a click (solenoid). The armature and brushes looked OK also.

What about trying to clean up all the connections first? Jack E/NJ |

Re: Starter quit
Took the starter to a shop.....they put it back together and tested it.....works fine. Now have to figure what is causing the problem. So much to learn and so little time.

Re: Starter quit
Roger, check your cables and connections. And remember, the starter itself makes ground only through the two long bolts holding it on. Just making continuity isn't enough. The starter takes a hell of a lot of juice and needs good solid connections.

Re: Starter quit
Possibly the solenoid. You heard it click, but its possible the heavy contacts inside are bad.

Re: Starter quit
Mac VP, is most likely correct, click usually spells out solenoid.

Re: Starter quit
To Ford38v8.......actually in my case I made up a stablizing bracket that connects from the long bolt to the pan bolt. This was a stock item originally but, I preferred to make one up rather than buying the stock item. More fun to fabricate. That connection gives me added ground. I will be replacing the solenoid if it doesn't check out. Also waiting for the next new part to not function.

Re: Starter quit
Roger, for a quick check, you can bypass the solenoid altogether.

Re: Starter quit
The starter checked out OK by an electrical shop. Bought a new solenoid from Napa (china built) and installed. I made sure all the connections were well attached and grounds are solid. Turned on the key.....click....no engagement. Tried several times. What to do? I hooked up the volt meter to the battery to see if there would be any voltage drop when the key is turned on. The starter engaged. Unhooked the volt meter and started the car up. Went for a ride and came home. Turned the key off. Started up several more times. Now I will be wondering if it will return to....click....no engagement.

Re: Starter quit
The starter on my 46 has done this to me a couple of times hit the key and nothing just a click as you said. But on my starter the gears on the bendix and the fly wheel get locked together some how some how. This has happened three times to me. First time I was able to rock the car and free it up the two other times I had to pull the starter out to disengage it. It is quite a pain in the rear when this happens. Not sure if this is the same problem your having just thought Id mention it to ya.
