Radiator and gas caps

Got my caps this week made by Vintique. They are very shoddily built. Are there any better ones being made or do you have to rechrome you old ones.

I am assuming you are speaking of 28/29 since you mentioned "plating"? As you are probably aware, there is some slight differences between each year so define what year you are looking for specifically and I can probably point you to someone that has some originals in what you are looking for. Sorry;They are for a 28 tudor. Is anyone else reproducing them?

Warren, again there is a difference between '28 and '29. An original, correctly-restored (Nickle) cap will generally cost about $100-$125 each.

I think that Berts sells a good cap for the 28-29 cars. Phone 800-321-1931, they are closed on sunday and monday. Vintique parts leave a lot to be desired. sometimes they make the only part that is manufactured for the model A and sometimes Vintique is better than nothing.

The 28 and 29 model A both use a threaded radiator cap. The top of the original 1928 radiator cap doesn't rise quiet as high as the 29 version but either will fit visa versa, the untrained eye will not notice the difference. Berts may have a renickled original, not sure. The last time that I talked to steve at Berts, he said that they sold a good 28-29 radiator cap that was NOT made by Vintique.

One of the main problems that I had with the vintique 29 cap was that the two halves would seperate, if I caught it before it fell off and was lost, I would put the halves back together with JB weld.

Snyder's carry a much better reproduction gas and radiator cap than most other suppliers. I believe they are called an Eaton. The gas cap is held together with two rivets instead of one as is found on the poor quality reproductions.

The ones with the single rivet will often allow the components to rotate and the gasket will block the vent hole and cause a vacuum in the tank and the engine will stall as if running out of gas.

There are three components that make up the assembly and the vent hole is drilled through all three. The rivet can allow the components to rotate by the action of twisting it on the tank boss.

The one in the photo is the single rivet type that has been modified after it rotated. A second hole was drilled and the components were pinned. A new vent hole was then drilled.

I bought one of the Vintique caps for my 29 CCPU and the gas that splashes around in the tank leaks out all the time.

What ares the difference in the 30-31 caps vs the earlier ones? My cap sits very high so that the window frame contacts it. Maybe it is not a problem with the window frame but the cap. Suggestions?

1930-31 are stainless steel and have locking tabs, so you only have to turn the cap about a quarter turn to install the caps.

1928-29 are threaded and nickel plated brass caps made with an inner cap and outer shell soldered together.





Here's a couple pictures showing the 28 and 29 caps, but I don't have any pictures of my 30-1 caps. Look closely and you will see the 6 thin slots between the inner and outer parts that act as a gas cap vent. Both the gas and radiator caps have the slots, but the radiator caps don't have the inner vent holes, so the vents are blocked off inside the cap.
