Need Help Have a 32 Tans bolting to a 39 Flatty
Here is the problem we have a good 32 also a good 34 transmissions, they are exactly the same and we have a 10" pressure plate that hits the bell housing on the trans and we can not bolt it in, I understand that the 39 transmission has a deeper bellhousing but if possible we want to use one of the ones we have, so would anyone know of what pressure plate we can use?

A 9" is what was used originally.10" is way to much IMO.

The 9-inch clutch assembly would likely fit OK. A 10-inch not so good. I've heard folks say that a relief can be ground in the trans case but I've never attempted that.

OK, but the flywheel is drilled for a 10" or is there a 9" that you are aware of that will fit the 10" bolt pattern ?

You may well have to have the flywheel re-drilled.

It hits down at the clutchshaft and up at the inspectionhole. |

Been there done that some early gearbox castings donīt like 10" pressureplates !
I can dig out 2 different castings and mark up where you need to grind it if it would help ? |

Re: Need Help Have a 32 Tans bolting to a 39 Flatty
Also on the old reconditioned flywheels, I had one that was drilled for a 10" and a 9" PP. The 9" pattern was perfectly concentric, the 10 bolt pattern which I was trying to use as you are, was .090" out of concentric causing it to interfere with the trans bell housing section. I figured someone had drilled the original 9" to a 10" and screwed it up.

your 39 motor should have had the 9" flywheel on it already. the one with the big blob of weight around it. have that cut off and balanced and away you go!

Most folks due cut the lip down on the older flywheels if that's what you have but I don't know if a 10 will fit without cutting off the lip.

Re: Need Help Have a 32 Tans bolting to a 39 Flatty
When Ford went to "Long" pattern clutches in 1935 they altered the trans case...if you look closely, the '32 bell area tapers in smoothly from the flange, while a '35-48 goes straight back from flange for about 1" and then tapers. I think they also slightly lowered the cross shaft and added a longer fork to compensate. This was because some cars got the 11" clutch then later the 10.*
I have been told but have never verified that using the 10" in '32-4 cases requires only minor grinding in areas like the bushing supports for clutch cross shaft. I'd put some crayon or grease on suspicious areas and rotate to study exactly where the interference is. * For additional confusion, I have seen '35-6's with apparently original serialed trans cases using the '34 style case. This generally did not matter in those years since probably 90% of cars used the 9". |

Re: Need Help Have a 32 Tans bolting to a 39 Flatty
This engine had a modern flywheel on it because its last home was in a Hot Rod, we are in the process of doing an "Old School" Hot Rod using a 31 Model A, We have a friend who may have a 39 Transmission and if not will just go with a 9" clutch & pressure plate. I have the link to our website that is the page of our build you may be interested in looking at, Boy are we having a good time doing this build, it is not professional just like back in the day, yea the welds look terrible but they are strong, just a bunch of old Geezers! Hey everyone thanks so very much

The trans in my 33 showed signs of fouling the 10" clutch. It must have made a helluva racket.

Re: Need Help Have a 32 Tans bolting to a 39 Flatty
No never even got it installed, we found the problem during assembly and immediately stopped all work till we found the solution, I am very comfortable with stock Model A's but obviously do not have a clue of what works and not works on these great old Flatheads, but is a enjoyable learning aadventure and you guys are a BIG HELP! very appreciated

Re: Need Help Have a 32 Tans bolting to a 39 Flatty
If you look at a 78 case you have a radius cut into the shaft support and the inspection hole doesnīt have a thicker edge going into the housing.
Theese 3 places has to be ground to fit a 10" Itīs not much that hits...i have a casing that was assembled and fired up before the guys doing it realised it was an interferance fit |
