Default 39 std e- brake question

does the front e-brake cable go thru the firewall. or the same opening as the steering column? also, just after where the wishbone connects, it runs thru a box, and the cable is hanging up on something inside. what am i missing?

I think the 1939 and 40 Fords use the same E-brake use the same E-brake set up. I am not sure what you mean when you say," just after where the wishbone connects, it runs thru a box, and the cable is hanging up on something inside." Please post a photo of the cable running thru " the box". The E-cable does run thru the grommet in the firewall along side the speedo cable. In the 3rd photo you can see the firewall grommet and the E-cable where it connects to the E-brake handle and adjustable clevis. Below are some photos that may help.

On 39s the cable goes out by top of steering column and there is a small metal retainer that is attached to the floorboard just above where the column goes through. Cable should probably run behind firewall insulator but it would have been impractical when installing a replacement back “in the day”. It will fit through the hole in the firewall but not with the speedometer cable there.

Originally, it was routed as depicted in my photographs. The lever assembly, brake cable and clamp are different than 1940.

marko, If possible post some photos of that cable as it: "goes out by top of steering column and there is a small metal retainer that is attached to the floorboard just above where the column goes through." Thanks, Jim

Thanks, "KUBE" for posting those clarifying photos. I didn't know 39 and 40 were different.
Still curious about Marko's "box".

Sorry I’m no good at posting pics. but the metal piece I was referring to is about 5” long and 2” wide. I believe these came up missing on many cars like the engine splash pans.

Marko, I am not certain what you are referring to as a "box". Where exactly is this "box" located?

I have attached yet another photograph that depicts where the cable runs below the floor pan.

I didn’t mention box, the op did. The part I was referring to is listed in the 39-40 body parts as “plate-(floor steering column cover) 78-700389.”

And thanks for the pics, I see I’m missing the clip that holds cable to trans.

If are trying to get the cable thru the center of the X-member and it is obstructed; it may very well be full of road dirt; good size rocks even get in there. I've taken a rod and poked around in there thru the various openings dislodging debris and getting it to fall out the bottom hole.

I did notice that the frame appears to be 1940. I suppose the possibility exists it is very late 1939. Also, that spacer at the radius ball cover is from a
4-speed transmission (pickup).
