It would most likely be Mercon V if you have the M5OD transmission. I have a shop manual for my 2000 Ranger so I'll have to check that to confirm what it states for the M5OD 5-speed.

From information I've found, it indicates that after FoMoCo developed the Mercon V synthetic and eventually made it reverse compatible to Mercon III. They then revoked license to produce Mercon III as obsolete. I think the older spec is still available since it was compatible with a later Dextron spec.

I have been using 10 w 30 engine oil in my ranger 5 speed t-5 in my pinto havn't had any problem , will this cause a problem? I don't know how to tell if it is a world class or the other type, I need some guidance as to tell the diffrence.
what is the easiest way to determine which is the w/c or not? also
I have some of the Mazda trans from an F150, I am thinking about putting it in my 46
half ton. with an 8ba can a person use the automatic trans engine to bell adapter
and maybe make a pilot bearing extension to compensate for the adapter distance?
these mazda trans have a good low gear for a pickup with the advantage of the 5th overdive. sounds to me like a good combination, I want some input as to the feasibility.
Thanks,
fordestes

Use the Mercon V in it. Yes, it is reverse compatible with all the earlier Mercon /Dextron formulas. I went thru all these changes working at the dealership level in parts, so it is the correct fluid. If you have an owners manual with the Ranger , all your fluids and capacities are listed in it.

Brendan,I thought the same thing, but I was told the transmission was designed for thin oil and thick oil would not flow into bearings.

Also all large farm tractors use thin ATF type hydraulic oil in the transmission and rear end. That always amazed me when I was farming.

As far as I know, the ATF is important because the newer transmissions have carbon fiber sliders on the synchronizers and regular oils will delaminate them.

I don't think the oil in my trans was ever changed it came out very dirty. this little truck is my bread and butter so I need to take care of it. the owners manual said to put in 3 qts of mercon. it is happy and I think it shifts easier
