I don't know when Appletons came in, but it was Unity for prewar Fords.
(A couple of pages in the '38-'39 Ford book are devoted to the subject).
The Ford script began in January '38, before which only the Unity name was on the unit.

Appleton Model 91 was introduced for 1941 Fords. I have the authentic literature for them.
