F-1 steering with 40 ford steering wheel again
What I have done is weld to top part of an early steering shaft with woodruff key to the f-1 shaft. I want to use the outer column tube out of the F-1. I am not sure how to adapt the bushing and spring set up under the steering wheel.

What wheel and column are you going to use?

The bearing will come out of the tube. A early style bushing works fine

I'm a little confused, are you wanting to use the F1 outer column tube with the 40 wheel and horn assy? If so, should be easy to do, you could use the original bearing or the rubber bushing style. The horn parts are in the wheel.

Re: F-1 steering with 40 ford steering wheel again
The F1 upper bearing, inner race and spring will work with the 40 wheel. You may need to drive the bearing in deeper (use a socket with an OD that will just slip in the column tube). Keep test fitting the spring and steering wheel until the wheel will seat on the taper. This is best done with out the woodruf key in place. Once the bearing is set at the correct spacing insert the key. This may take 3 hands to compress the spring and get the key in place. Make sure the key fits tight, or the spring will launch it out everytime.
Also, think about using a 40-47 pickup column tube. Those will have the correct bell to match your steering wheel. Neal |
