Default Different shade of Washington Blue.

Hi all

I have a 36 Tudor painted in Washington blue. When I bought it and got it home I noticed the front fenders were a different shade. I was just wondering if there was a light and dark color or just a lousy paint match.

I'm going to have it re-done, but I want to have it the near black Washington Blue. Thanks for any help Merry Christmas to all Pat

Most likely a poor color match. Unless you have the original paint formula and use the original type of paint you will probably not see the original Washington blue. Just have it painted in a color that satisfies you as being Washington blue and be happy.

Poor color match!!!! Different paint mixer, different spray gun, different compressor pressure, different humidity ALL can change the chroma of the color.

Several years ago I called the PPG tech line and was told that 1987 Isuzu Trooper Cavalier Blue is the same as Washington Blue.

I painted my '31 coupe with it in single stage. I like the color. Can't say for sure if it's near the original WB.

That Washington Blue-ish would look good on my 32 highboy with black fire wall and frame.

Thanks guys. Kinda what I thought. My front fenders are the problem. It looks like they didn't give the primer time to set up and the finish coats is all cracked and peeling off. I'm thinking of just removing the fenders and have them re-done. The rest of the paint is great. It's an older restpration. Anyway thanks for your comments. Pat

The color of the undercoating will also effect the top coat color.

A reputable painter should be able to get it really close, not sure you will ever get it exact. Usually in the early morning or late afternoon you'll see the difference in matched repaints when the lighting is most even and indirect.

I am using the same color mix on my 41 Ford custom. It is almost Blue/black. My understanding is that Ford used Red oxide primer which would give it a darker shade. Perhaps the person that touched up the paint on your car used a grey primer underneath which would give it a lighter shade.

Just a thought. Those 36's look nice with black fenders. Problem solved.
