Model B water pump rebuilding
There seems to be lack of availability of Model B water pump rebuilding kits?
Discontinued? Mac's Sells a complete pump but I don't think it is for a 1933 model B, but a 1932 model B because the neck does not slant enough. Has anyone rebuilt a model B pump. Below is pictured the MAC's model B pump...I think 1932 is shown. |

Re: Model B water pump rebuilding
Also, if you have a good casting and a good impeller you can use the readily available Model A rebuilding parts...you would push the long Model A shaft through your impeller to correct length and play then pin it at that length and saw off the overhang. Bearings and stuff fit.

Side question? How is the pulley attached to the end of the pump?

Re: Model B water pump rebuilding
Apart from the shorter pump shaft, be careful as the front bearing and grease seal arrangement at the front of the pump is different on the shortened '33-'34 versions than on the '32 and Model A versions. It is highly unlikely that the sellers of rebuilding kits are aware of that difference and what they are selling is for Model As and '32 pumps.

David, what is the difference in the bearing and seal? I looked in the
1937 parts book and it shows the same 28-34, is this a mistake? Bob |

Re: Model B water pump rebuilding
I have rebuilt the '32 and '33-'34 versions using NOS or NORS rebuilding kits and never noticed a difference on the front bearing and seal parts. The older Thompson kits had the bearing and seal parts in a small box and were identical in kits for each version.

Re: Model B water pump rebuilding
There were two different versions of the felt retainers for the front bearing, B-8540-A and B-8540-B. The latter is shallower than the former and while the former worked fine in the '32 pumps that I've rebuilt, they caused binding in the '33-'34 pumps I've restored (to the extent that even with the leverage of the fan attached the shaft could barely be rotated). Evidently in the rebuild kits only the B-suffix version was supplied.

Re: Model B water pump rebuilding
Interesting information. I wonder if the went to the later version for all 32-34 in the rebuild kits?
