Default Spring Perch Fix

I just finished this one and I am happy with it. Just thought I would share.

Looks like you saved that early 32 perch. Note that the shackle pin is the same diameter as the large one in the rear spring, unlike the later (normal) perch that has the same diameter size shackle pin as the front spring. It also has that little step where some think it was for knocking the pin down into the axle that the later perches lack.

The part number was hard to read but looked like a B prefix. I did not know what it was with the bump. THANKS

I THINK the bump is a location for a centre drilling, allowing the pin to be machined between centres. If you look, it is in line with the shaft of the pin.

Mart.

Edit: I just went out and looked at my axles, both as assembled from new, as far as I know.

The one in my roadster has no bumps on either side. The one from my 32 sedan, again, unmolested, has a perch with a bump on one side and one without on the other. The bump has no centre drilling, I must have imagined that. It is positioned where a press could be used to push the pin in if a little tight on assembly.

Maybe the bump was phased out after a while as unnecessary, or there were different suppliers, one with a bump and one without.

Odd that my 32 has one of each type.

Mart,

Not all that odd as Ford did not pay anyone to match up parts that were functionally equal but had minor differences in appearance. Mold numbers on head lamp lenses are another good example.

And then there are the examples where similar, but not functionally equal parts should have been sorted, but weren't. I was in the process of installing an '32 trunk rack (early North American version where the bases and arms are riveted to the rack) last week and lo and behold, instead of one each of the right and left side bases it had two right hand bases. This is a rack that has never been taken apart (the rivets are very distinctive). Therefore there are no countersunk areas at the top and bottom of the slot in the base for the adjustment knob to seat into on the left side, which detracts considerably from the amount of weight that the rack can support and is ultimately destructive to the tapered end of the die cast adjustment knob.
