I have struggled with the lip on the drums for years. So many times the adjusters won't back off due to rust. I'm not the type to give up so I always get them off in the end. This is my first time doing brakes on a half ton truck so I have never needed a puller. For whatever warped reason I have owned only the tonners and big trucks with full floating rear axles (1934 and up), but I have spent a lifetime doing the brakes on them. Is there a keyway in the half ton's tapered axle shaft, or is it just the taper that keeps the hub to the axle shaft? If so that seems really odd.

The hub's taper "locks" itself to the axle's taper using the exact, same principle that "locks" a Morse-Tapered bit into a Morse chuck on your drill press. The key is not designed to transmit any torque. That's the reason for so much torque on that big axle nut.......GOTTA be tight! DD

When I finally got out to the shop I got sidetracked working on the woodie's doors and still haven't pulled off a drum. This tool looks like it is up to the task. The thread protector which is threaded onto the axle, then backed up 1/2 turn seems like it will do that part. I guess time will tell, but sounds like some folks even have good luck with the crappy ones. Something about the way everything fits together inspires confidence in me. I will give a full report after I give it a try after work someday this week.

Yes.. To my horror I watched someone who I admire do up an axle nut with just a 15" shifter.. HE was working on a very nice 38 doing the rear brakes.. I had to step in and say at least get all the grease of the taper, you have to do it up tight etc etc.. Well anyway I gave up but did pull the owners mate aside and said my piece .. I really hope that the wheels are still on ...

every old car i've ever owned that had tapered axles, they were loose when i bought it. crank em tight, and check again 100 miles later

There are still some "old school" tool vendors that AREN"T "Harbor Freight" that carry them .... I have a different model for my DESOTOS -- that has 3 jaws on it .......

Not every tool in the world is made in china!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard one referred to as an "all sixteenths" wrench, which I thought was pretty good.

Ford is the reason the tool mfg. companys included 32" size in the wrench sets.
This applies to wrench sets made before metric sizes were popular in the USA.
