I'm turning mine back down for the simple fact that it looks SO much better.
You can download the handbook online for free.

Model A coils face/point down. Thats how they were made. These coils were resin filled.

The only way I would think is to take a coil, drill a hole to drain the oil --to know the volume and then cut the bottom of the coil off.. then put the oil back in and see if the oil covers all of the windings... if so, I would think upside down would be fine..

I live 50 miles out of town and always point my coil tower up. Learned this in the 50's. they get hot and misfire or stop. Let them cool and turn them so that they are pointing up and you should be able to drive to the part store.

I bought mine from Amazon as they had the best price at the time.

Some of the oil filled one will make a "splashing" sound when you shake them near your ear. Of course a resin filled one will never make the sound, however I can not state that all oil filled ones will make the noise.
can you use these with the original points and stuff, or do you have to change everything.

The 40111 coil is a modern 1.5 ohm, epoxy filled and will work fine as is, just plug and play.

Upside down should be fine unless the seal starts to leak oil. When the coil heats up the pressure tries to escape and pushing the oil out is the only possible escape. It the coil is right side up, then the oil is away from the seal.
