listen here dad and fellow mates, i don't want to be the one to rain on your back yard /barn yard party so go ahead and remove stuck fasteners that way. the tool that brent shows is a safe way to do it without using a flame.*** i NEVER said a charger would not work but what i did say it may not be the best thing for the individual doing it***..SO LETS GET THAT STRAIGHT.. just the other day i went to throw the charger on a battery and did not realize it was left on so after plugging it in and accidentally touching the clamps together a spark flew in my eye and burnt it. a trip to the local eye doctor and some juice fixed it up as good as new. thats just one example of what can go wrong so wear eye protection. when doing things in an unorthodox barn / back yard way can sometimes lead to accidents so be careful we don't want to see someone get hurt.
i think buster t is the only one with common sense here
carry on

Speaking of battery chargers, one thing I never understood is why they DON"T have an OFF-ON switch on most of the smaller ones?

You should never connect or disconnect the battery charger cables with the charge turned on, and this would be a more common practice if they had an OFF-ON switch, rather than walking over to the outlet to unplug the charger each time.

As Tom pointed out it seems that a charger switch or a foot operated switch in this case would be good thing to turn off charger as soon as the item reaches the correct temperature without unplugging the cord.

Disconnecting the output wires with power on would draw an arc with sparks.

Say, is this a good time to bring up night crawler hunting with 120 Volts? LOL

Like Rainmaker Ron, I'm sure if Ben were living today & had a Model A carburetor with stubborn broken or stripped brass jets, he probably would have written a subsequent Forum article on removing the stubborn jets by attaching one's carburetor to a wet kite string in a thunderstorm!

Rainmaker Ron has a reputation of being a very keen person at the end of the line, & when everything else has failed, looks impossible, & everyone has just about given up, some in his circle who knows him have learned to comment:

"Did you pass it by Ron yet?"

That's right. A very nice lighted rocker switch costs 95 cents at the axman. I think I will pick up a few and add them to my battery chargers.

Henry, you are too kind! You must be reading my mail as that question sounds just like my old boss. It was most rewarding to be given a swing at everything that came by.

Hi Ron,

Just still have a memory!

You & your most wonderful wife Jane may have left your Model A parts business behind in Peoria; however, some of your customer friends never forgot both of you!

It always seems difficult to give away sincere kindness -- looks like it always seems to bounce back!

I have a friend who thinks that if you turn a charger off & leave it hooked to the battery, it WILL drain the battery. Are there some chargers that might do this?? Bill W.

Bill, you tryin' to start somethin?
There are folks who think leaving a battery on concrete or the ground will discharge it, and that it must be set on wood.
(despite the fact that a battery while in a car rests on metal, which is way more conductive than concrete or dirt could ever be !!!!)
OK now, watch the sparks fly

That used to be the old batteries. They were made of hard rubber and if set on concrete the acid would "dry out" Into the concrete

Yes some old / broke ones may. If the charger has a poor diode on one side it can have a reverse drain. The charger with a bad diode should also have a lower output. I also have seen some that put a small pilot light across the output, which would create a little drain. A newer one seems to not have the issues.

Ah! a diode, thanks, jmeckel! I didn't think of that. I always wondered if they used a relay or something. Can't remember ever having a charger case opened up. Bill W.
