Make sure the engine has a 3 degree slope downward to its rear.

Ken, here are a couple of shots of the muffler on my VE-28 chassis. It has the early style Aires muffler. The pipe is low but not below the rear axle housing. I don't know if this helps.

Now I'm confused (nothing new). From that picture, it looks to me as though the pipe IS below the axle housing and exactly where it's supposed to be.

And it will go even lower when the body is on the frame.

I'm sure you've thought covered it but it sounds like you're dealing with a chassis so the frame will sit higher until the complete weight of the body is on it . And as Tom said the rear spring will have an affect on it

I've installed a number of those mufflers and not had the problem you are describing once the full body weight is on

Here's a couple of photos of an Aires muffler I recently installed the fit was good and when body's installed I think it will be below the rear axle housing .
