Procedure for dropping oil pan 46-48 ford super deluxe?
Looking for step by step procedure for oil pan removal and installation on my '47 ford v8 super deluxe. Engine is still in the car. Any help would be much appreciated.

The only thing missing is disconnecting the front engine mounts and loosening the rear transmission mount and jacking the engine up enough for the oil pan to clear the front frame cross-member when coming off.

Sounds like it might be easier to pull the engine to do it?

Usually pulling the pan is followed by pulling the engine if a problem is involved. I'm too old to "get out and get under", so working on an engine stand sure beats crawling under.

Re: Procedure for dropping oil pan 46-48 ford super deluxe?
I've had the pan off my 47 - but it's been at least a dozen years ago. I've probably forgotten stuff. But, I remember needing the hot wrench to get the crossover pipe loose. Without a torch, don't know what I might have done. I don't remember jacking the engine. Could it be that the crank needs to be rotated to the 'right' position? Seems like Henry's (Craig's) manual would have mentioned this. In any event, if the engine needs to be raised, it can't be more than a small chunk of 2 x 4 at the front mounts. I thiink it may have been a chunk of 4 x 4, or maybe 2 x 6 used to force the wishbone down at the ball.

Well, I don't think you mentioned why you want to remove the pan. Maybe some more help can be provided if the reason is known. John

Almost always one or more exhaust manifold bolts will break off, making repair tough.

Wow! I had no idea it would be that involved. I was thinking of dropping the pan to check for sludge. Many thanks to everyone that responded. Lots of information. I don't think I am up to doing all of that. I have not drained the oil out yet and still working on replacing brake lines. This car has sat for quite a few years.

Quote:
The drain hole is way big enough to get your finger way in there and feel around the bottom of the pan for sludge. You'll know it if you feel it. It's like oily mud.

Thanks Henry. I will do that. Just curious, did you find much sludge in your pan when you pulled it off?

Re: Procedure for dropping oil pan 46-48 ford super deluxe?
Before I started up my engine after sitting for 31 years I drained the oil and felt up in there and there was plenty of sludge. I acutally bought a new oil pan gasket to take the pan off to clean it but when I realized what a chore that was I wrapped a popcycle stick with a piece of paper towel and used it to scoop and scrape the sludge out through the drain hole. I got most of it then I put kerosene in the engine and turned it over for a while (not starting it) to work it through everywhere then drained it out to rinse it. All of that was 8 years and 65,000 miles ago.
It wasn't until this year when I had the transmission out and decided to smooth and balance the flywheel that I had to take the oil pan off to get the flywheel off. Of course, I had no sludge in it at that time after regular oil and filter changes with good quality oil.

Thanks Old Henry. My car is very similar to yours as it is a '47 and has sat for lots of years inside a building. I will give your method a try.

Re: Procedure for dropping oil pan 46-48 ford super deluxe?
I know this is an old thread, but I just did this job and thought it might help someone else while it's still fresh in my mind. I drained the radiator, unbolted it completely and removed the two front motor mount bolts. This allowed me to raise the engine and radiator as a unit, it didn't have to go up much, maybe an inch over stock. I put my jackstands under the frame at the cowl so the front axle was hanging, I didn't need to remove the draglink I had plenty of room. I have dual exhaust so exhaust wasn't an issue. Other than that it was pretty straightforward.
