40 years, no noise, installed with new crank gear, proper backlash (crank cam center lines in spec) ----engine runs quiet enough that you can hear points and spark jumping gap in cap---except lately because big crack in ex manifold

i get a tapping when first started cold . when the aluminum gets a little heat the taping goes away . only when cold on first start . the gear has to get warm to come to the correct clearance's .

I installed one last year, about 2000 miles ago, in my un=restored, now 88,000 mile engine, same crank gear.
I have not detected any noise from the timing gear this is detectable above the other noises (valves, piston slap, probable bearing knocks)... but my jalopy kind of sounds like a threshing machine anyway. One noise that went away was a knock that was actually the camshaft slamming back and forth, due to broken thrust plunger spring, which was replaced with the timing gear. I'm curious as to what type of noises folks have gotten from Aluminum cam gears ? Is is gear-whine or ringing-sounds ? SC Frank |
