Hottest Parade Ever

Drove my 30 Tudor in the Mt. Morris, IL 4th of July Parade today as I have done now annually for 26 years. I can say it was the hottest I ever experienced. The 100 degree plus weather kept the Model A attendence down as well as the number of parade watchers...

Vapor lock or no vapor lock the old cars did not like the slow pace of the parade but 12 Model A's from the Rock-Ford A's made it through the parade route without any over heating or stalls. Lots of complaints on rough running and constant GAV adjusting though. My radiator Quail's butt has probably never looked so red from the high red mercury showing in the motormeter tube.

We would have been a big hit if we could have thrown out ice cubes instead of candy.

Parades aren't fun when it's that hot. I did a parade in Stephenville this morning. There was a nice breeze & low humidity this morning. Wasn't that bad. Was a 45 minute parade and I never got over 180*.

We had a parade here in Manteca Ca this morning and it was in the 80's. The sad part was that there was only one Model A in the whole parade a was carrying the Grand Marshal. But at the end of the parade the firemen ran from block to block with two of the old wheel carts with fire hoses. They hook the hoses to the hydrant and give any one who went out into the intersection a good soaking for 5 or 10 minutes.

Fortunately, our club (Napa Valley A’s) had good weather, clear with high 80’s, for the annual Napa County Fair July 4th parade in Calistoga (north end of Napa Valley). We had 10 Model A’s; a 1928 Sport Coupe, a 1928 Fordor Sedan, a 1928 Open Cab Pickup, a 1929 Standard Coupe, a 1930 Tudor Sedan, a 1930 Standard Coupe, a 1930 Limousine (former 1930 Fordor Sedan), two 1930 Deluxe Coupes and a 1931 Tudor Sedan.

As mentioned in another thread, we typically are placed with the animals, usually after the hogs (motorcycles) and before the horses. This year, we followed the horses. Fortunately, there were no collisions as various and sundry Model A’s maneuvered around numerous animal-based road obstacles, no doubt to the amusement of the 60+ Harleys following us (which brings to mind the question: “What’s the difference between a Harley and a Hoover vacuum cleaner?”).

After the parade we enjoyed a pot-luck barbecue followed by a full-contact bocce ball tournament at (where else, this being Napa) a winery.

The obvious answer is, There is no difference. They both suck.

I liked my Harley when I was much younger, but honestly, it was like riding an out of balance washing machine. I sold it and bought a Triumph. That was enough bike for me. Then I nearly got smashed by a big truck, so I sold the Triumph and quit riding. That was about 40 years ago, but I still miss it.

Parade in downtown Anchorage went well. About a dozen or so Model A's and a bunch of other "old ???" cars (50's - 60's). Temprature was in the high 50's. My truck never got off the peg at 130.

Our club had to bow out of our local one. It would have been too hot for many of the older participants. We hit 95 degrees by the time the parade would have been done and parades are just killers since you get no air into the car.

it was hot here in the Chicago area, out temps by us rose to 106 the car was hot but kept a constant 187 water temp and drove fine. GAV open 1/2 turn and higher RPM on the throttle and ran perfect.. Me another story...but running good after a cool shower!!

It was hot for us to in Monson, MAss., low 90's high humidity
That is my 1929 Pick up along with other members from the Western Mass Model A Ford Restorers Club.

hopefully you couldn't see all the dirt & dust on the car. I've driven about 3,000 miles in the last month and haven't washed it once. Guess I'll get around to it by the next parade.

Pedro & Pat Westmorlen (Sp?) from comanche, LT & Diane Cooper of Stephenville (owners of the cooper feed store). Plus many more. But those were some of my grandparents best friends that I've always known.
