A very nice right front fender for a '39 deLuxe or a '40 Ford car. This fender is solid and even the area where it bolts to the running board is not rusty. The headlight mounting bolts and captive nuts are rust free as well, looks good and straight....350 bux. South central New Mexico.

Difficult to tell from the photos but this fender appears to be 1939, not 1940.

They're the same....'39 DeLuxe and '40 standard and DeLuxe The '39 standard is different. Pickup trucks are different too. Our lesson for today!

To keep today's lesson "simple": While it is very possible to find (correctly so) a '40 fender (design) on a late '39, it was extremely unlikely to find a '39 fender (factory installed) on a '40. This matters to the guys attempting to restore their cars correctly. Pictures attached below are a green '39 (early) and a blue '40 fender. Last edited by Kube; 02-07-2012 at 09:01 AM. |

I must agree with KUBE above. Although your fender is really nice looking, it appears to be EARLY '39 DeLuxe...not CORRECT for a '40, although we all know it will bolt-on to a '40. DD

Well here is a pic of the fender I have for sale (primer) as well as a pic of my '40 Ford car fender (black)...look the same to me. Also I would thank you two "engineers" to stop hi-jacking threads. You don't seem to be buyers to me? Having too much knowledge is not always a good thing... |

Buford---- Sorry you think we are hijacking your thread. There are at least 3 different fenders. Early `39 deep curve or valleyed fenders, late `39, and `40. With respect Buford, Kube, and Coopman---- If you hold a staight edge across the reverse curve on early `39 between the middle of inner edge of headlite opening and the grille flange you will get a gap about 3/4". On a late `39 and `40 the gap wiil be about 1/4" this difference is quite noticeable to the experinced eye. The difference between all `39`s and `40`s. is the distance between the step for the grille and the first carriage bolt hole on the fender flange. all early and late `39`s were about 1 1/2" . 40`s were about 1/4". This can be seen on on Bufords first picture. The `39 grille [and `40 standard] was shorter than the `40 deluxe. So Ford had to move the step higher when the `40 deluxe come out, but it would still fit the standard grille. There would just be 1 1/2" space between the top of standard grille and the step To install a `40 deluxe grille on any `39 you would have to relocate the step higher if you want to do it correctly. Bufords fender is a `40 in my eyes as it has the shallower 1/4" deep curve. It is clear in the first picture that the step on the flange is 1/4" from the bolt hole. Ford could have used up his late `39 fenders on `40 standards but definately not on deluxes. Hope this makes sense.---- Barry <br>

Barry, You are correct. I did not want to go in to that much detail and apparently some folks are not too interested in the reality.
I didn't feel I was hijacking any thread. I buy lots of parts on a frequent basis. However, I am one of those guys that desires the "correct' stuff. Hence, my earlier post. With Buford's new photo it is apparent this is a 40 fender. As I am currently restoring a pair of 39's, and have already possess a set of NOS 40 fenders, I have no need for this one. Kind regards to you... |
