Default Checking oil

How far down does the dip stick go, meaning all the way to the "O" on the dip stick to the block, or just where the metal comes together on the dip stick? What I am trying to say is how far does the dip stick go into the oil pan?
Hope that makes sense, I just want to make sure I have the correct amount of oil in the oil pan.
Thank you,

All the way down. On my engines I don't keep the oil at the Full mark, the oil seems to seek a level around half way. If I fill it up it seems to just leak out.

Yes all the way in, I keep mine just off the full mark. After an oil change about 4 1/2 qt in it. Bill

Mine does the samething, if I fill it to the full mark it will run out until it reaches about an eight of an inch or so below the full mark. At that point although it stills drips some it will pretty much hold there.

Change the oil but in 4 1/2 quarts and check the dip stick level mark. You may or may not have an original dip stick so the level mark may be off a little.

when I got my first A motor an old timer told me that you were supposed to check the oil with the stick out of the block, trust me you dont want to do this, it took me about 30 seconds to figure out that this wasnt right, allot of windage.

Remember that original dipsticks are one-piece... rolled around. Remember to fit the "short" end into the dipstick hole... otherwise you'll always read "low."
