hello everybody, does anyone knows if the brake shoes are the same both front , rear on 1956 lincoln premiere ? thanks for help me

When you say front and rear, are you referring to the front and rear axle or front (primary) or rear (secondary) brake shoe themselves?

Usually, the front shoes are wider on the front as compared to the rear on a four drum system.

The front brakes perform about seventy-percent of the vehicle braking and shoe sizes along w/ wheel cylinder diameter gives proper brake balance.

The MPC does not give the shoe sizes so you would have to check your WORKSHOP MANUAL under BRAKE - SPECIFICATIONS.

Are you able to call INTERNATIONAL on your cellphone and talk with them?

It seems (to me) that the front shoes would be the wider but they give no further information.

If able to contact, also ask the source of the shoes (CHINA). Brakes are somewhere you do not use box-store parts.

When in doubt, pull brake drums off one side, front and rear and measure and you will know. If all is stock and not been abused you can compare with what is available.

That's the problem. It's SERVICE HISTORY and the car being in FRANCE.

I don't know if you can make out the parts list I attached but the PN's for FRONT/REAR shoes are different.

If you have the LINC MANUAL, in the BRAKE SECTION at the end should be SPECIFICATIONS and sizing should be given there.

That's indicating the front shoes are wider than the rear.

Just got off the horn with KANTER.

His info source shows 12 x 2 1/2 FRT and 12 X 2 RR for a power assist drum car.

He has the FRT SHOES in stock but does not have the rear as they order in batches and they haven't had the sell volume to re-order. He also has FRT and REAR HARDWARE KITS.

The shoes are made in TAIWAN (better than CHI-CON SLOPPY COPIES), but the quality is unknown until you try to stop. There is no exchange core charge and that is another warning (to me).

Now here is the thing, not only does the actual brake pad have to be a certain width, but the pad(s) will usually have different lengths for individual applications. This and wheel cylinder dia. gives proper brake balance on a 4-wheel drum car.

That info will be part of the BRAKE SPECS that should be in the WSM.

They are also bonded shoes which IMO is inferior to riveted linings as came from the factory.

The trick here in the US is to have your shoes relined and you will be offered a choice of lining material as to how you want the car to perform. I am sure you don't have that option.

Questionable also will be the quality of the brake drum and any hydraulic part you many need (IMO).

Here in the US you can have drums relined also. There must be the same service in EU.

Just as a point of interest, my 54 Ford customline shoes are same width front and back. But the front shoes have an additional hole in the side for a rear facing return spring. I did mine and must have put the fronts on the rear first cause I now remember those holes. When I did the fronts I simply drilled holes for that extra spring...was too lazy to re-do the rears as getting that little emergency brake clip in place is a real PITA.
