Re: 54 Ford Interior Considerations
The repro parts suppliers offer some type of insulation you can use as a sound-deadener under your carpet. If you buy custom cut carpet for your model, it already has a jute backing glued to it.
I would guess most restorers would use the sound deadener, a layer of jute, then the carpet. I did not do that. I cut roofing felt and just laid it on the floor, then threw the full-coverage floor mat on top (which is held in place by the door scuff plates at the door openings as it was done originally). BTW, those floor mats come with jute backing attached to the underside of the mat with adhesive. I removed the jute before putting the mat down (due to rain water leakage), but boy does that floor get scorching hot in the summer. |

Re: 54 Ford Interior Considerations
Appreciate the tip, by I'm in Ohio; so the So Cal would be a little too much of a Road Trip; not that I'm against Road Trips; actually in 1969....yea I'm a little old, and drove a Triumph TR6 from Ohio to LA; a lot of stories there; and most recently drove to Denver to pick up, you ready for this; a Ford Maverick....but like I've said in a number of my post, going to get this 54 up and running good, get the interior "presentable" and at this point all on the "cheap", just to see what she is all about. May make those door panels and cover them myself, did it on a 64 Galaxie I had, and came out pretty good.
My big question is whether I should glue down the Jute and then glue the Carpeting on the Jute. Also; I believe I've done this in the past, but can't find how I can post any pics; any suggestions? |

Re: 54 Ford Interior Considerations
To post pics in a topic, don't use the Quick reply at the bottom of the page.
Pic the blue "POST REPLY" button above the quick reply box. There is a bunch of icons at top of the message box. Pick the one that looks like a paper clip. That will open a pic selection box that you can pick out of your computer hard drive. Hit the attach button and when your pic filename appears, you can select more pics using the next box or you can hit the close window button and return to your post. At the post; hit that paperclip button again and select your pic or hit include all. The pic(s) will now be attached inside your post. |

Re: 54 Ford Interior Considerations - Door Panels
OK, got the door handles and door panels off - I posted some "tips" and a great "tool" you can use to get those handles / clips off, it's under another topic I believe I posted; anyway;
Here's what I did so far; doing it on the "cheap" just to get this 54 somewhat presentable for some "weekend cruises" Explanation below, I'll insert the pics that go with it: DOOR PANELS: Removed the old, badly stained panels. Under what was over them was the "original" vinyl coverings, but the panel boards were worn, mildue and somewhat rotted away NEW PANELS: Contacted some local uphostery guys, they want an arm and leg for the panel boards; probably because they wanted the entire job. Looked around at some of the Big Box stores, just couldn't find a board that would work; so I went down to my local Surplus Store and picked up 4 sheets of 1/4 Plastic Panels - $5.00 a sheet. DOOR PANEL COVERING: Same Surplus Store; had all kinds of material, I mean all kinds; I went with the naugerhyde, black stitch material; it has some backing to it, and may come out pretty nice. DOOR PANEL INSTALLATION: OK, at this point I got the panels cut, shaped and mounted for fit.....hell they look nice like they are, just the plastic, no covering, but I'm going to cover them. Note: In the one pic you'll see a "Filet Knife", this worked great, trimming the plastic panel once on the door, just to get a good fit. Comments at this point welcomed. JPL/OHIO |
