Default Johnson lifters, adjustrer torque

Installing a set of NOS Johnson adjustable lifters in the 59L block. Some of the adjuster bolts seem to be tighter than others. Is there a spec for the inch or foot lbs of torque they should at ? Thank you Fordbarners.

run the bolt down and adjust on the way back out--they seem to get tighter that way???

Thank you. I found the same thing, they seem to get tighter the further you back them out. Another thing I saw was a quarter turn equals right about .010, which made it easy to prep them before installation. I measured the distance between the adjuster and the end of the valve, logged it for each marked lifter and valve, so I can adjust them fairly close to .012 & .014 before I install the valves and lifters.

your procedure is very close to what we do. I wonder if there is a "nub" under the bolt that spreads the bolt as it goes down??

The bolt has two separate threaded sections that are slightly out of phase with each other.
They can be tightened by squeezing the sections together.

There is a good picture and description of the process for improving resistance of the lifter adjuster bolt in Vern's book on the flathead, page 148, figure 14
