Engine Splash Pans

1940 ford pickup engine splash pans. No sure if the pans went on top of the frame of attached below the frame. Also, were any of the bolt holes to the pan attached using the oil pan bolts? Thanks

They bolt to the frame and front cross member with what looks like 1/4-20 thread cutting washer head hex bolts no more than 1/2"long with I think 3/8" hex. From the bottom. Nothing go's to the pan that I remember. G.M.

GM is correct. I remember that I had to remove the pitman arm to install the one on the driver side. You can avoid that problem by making a cut in the splash pan and using a little piece of sheet metal to scure the edges together after installation. Much easier.

* The pans only install one way. The one with the round hole is the left side, the one with the elongated hole, the right side.
* Originally there was small piece (about 1 1/2" x 2 1/2") of duck cloth between the pan attachment points and the frame.
* The pans are part of the cooling system. They do direct the air according to Ford's "plan". Thus, I would suggest installing them.
* It is quite easy to remove the pitman arm to install the left pan. Most often though it was cut as 19Fordy suggested.
* The exhaust pipe must be routed through the right pan.
* GM describes the fasteners the best. However, authentic for 1940 had a 7/16" hex head. All were cadmium plated.

I just put the pans on my '41, they bolt up to the bottom of the frame, I have the pics of the bolts u asked 4 just haven't uploaded them yet. If you check my '41 build thread you can see the pans in place.....

Heres a pic of the original bolts for the spash pans. There are threaded holes in the frame.

From what I was told before, splash pans were standard however most mechanics ditched them with the first repair of the front end/engine.

Thanks guys...I happened to find them at fastenal where I work...However I get most of my bolts from Roy....was more interested on where on the frame they connected....
