New oil pump
I got a new oil pump from Speedway for my 8CM and was wondering what I need to do to prime it? Thanks in advance!

Re: New oil pump
Not sure what the Vaseline does different than grease, but that is what you use on automatic transmissions.

Just so the pump is not dry and can make enough suction to pick up oil. Vaseline will melt and go away almost instantly when oil starts flowing...trying to wash away good quality grease with oil will take a while. Grease in an automatic gearbox... it will shift like shit for a week until the grease is gone from the valves...been there done that . |

Re: New oil pump
Thank you Murre; that makes perfect sense. I thought it might have been an old wives tail.

Re: New oil pump
You might want to pick up an old Ford pump, just in case the speedway pump doesn't work.

Re: New oil pump
Was there a guy on the Ford engine assembly line whose job it was to pack new pumps with vaseline?
Does Speedway sell Melling pumps?

Re: New oil pump
It seems strange after all these years there are not instructions with an oil pump with large red letters. ATTENTION PUMP INSTALLATION REQUIRES THE PUMP TO BE PACKED WITH VASELINE TO AVOID ENGINE DAMAGE FAILURE TO DO SO WILL VOID PUMP WARRANTY.

Re: New oil pump
I think that may be a reasonable answer^^^^ The vaseline is close to an urban legend
not a true requirement. R |

Re: New oil pump
while i am not going to brag about being about being a flathead expert like many here with much more experience than me, i have an old trumpet car horn, mid 30s chevy?, and i brazed a pipe thread fitting on the end to make a long sturdy funnel. get every thing ready, then dump most of the 4 quarts to start it, its slow, have something else to do, then remove it and screw in a pressure gauge, spin the motor with the plugs out, and bingo!! oil pressure almost immediately.
